Vancouver Canucks defenseman Ben Hutton has a fantastic new mullet thanks to a bet with defensive partner Erik Gudbranson. Gudbranson, in an attempt to fire up the team coming off a loss to the New Jersey Devils on Nov. 6, said if he didn't score the game-winning goal that night against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Nov. 8, he'd let Hutton choose his hairdo. If Gudbranson scored the game-winner, he'd choose Hutton's new hairstyle.
It seemed like a pretty safe bet for Hutton considering Gudbranson had 11 goals in five seasons and none this season.
"The boys laughed and the odds were in my favor on that one,"
Hutton told Fort Nucks.
Well, the Canucks beat the Lightning 5-1, and you can guess who scored the second goal.
So off to the barbershop they went earlier this week, with ideas spinning in Gudbranson's head.
"I had so many options," Gudbranson said. "But I didn't want to ruin the kid's life. At first I thought about a nice rat tail, then I was inspired by an old photo I found."
The old photo was of Canucks assistant coach Doug Lidster from his playing days in the early 1990s with the full business in the front, party in the back going on.
"We went to the hairdresser and he showed them the picture," Hutton said. "I was nervous because he was laughing and the hairdressers were laughing as he's showing all these pictures on his phone and then all of sudden, they're like, 'Yeah, I like this one.' And I'm like, 'Oh no, what's going on?' and then she just started cutting away."
Hutton is obligated to keep the mullet for four days, per the agreement.
"Or who knows?" Hutton said. "Maybe I'll keep it long if I start to embrace it and start liking it."
