Getzlaf was injured 23 seconds into the game after teammate Corey Perry's shot was redirected by Hurricanes forward Sebastian Aho and hit him in the face. He played six more shifts in the first period after returning from the locker room but did not come out for the second period.
Coach Randy Carlyle said Getzlaf made the decision to not finish the game.
"We just felt it was in his best interest to be evaluated by our doctors to see what the issues are," Carlyle said. "He didn't feel comfortable going out there, so he couldn't play."
The Ducks won 4-3 in a shootout.
Getzlaf, 32, has seven points (one goal, six assists) in six games. He missed the first two games of the season and then three straight from Oct. 13-20 because of a lower-body injury.
