Dunn, Montour Added As Kraken Alternate Captains

Kraken defensemen Vince Dunn and Brandon Montour have both spent recent seasons trying to take on more of a leadership role by example.

Whether stepping up with two-way, on-ice play, or serving as off-ice spokesmen during times calling for team introspection, Dunn and Montour have both been there to answer the call.

And on Wednesday morning, a different kind of call came their way as both were told they’d been added to the team’s list of alternate captains for the coming season. The pair will join captain Jordan Eberle and returning alternates Matty Beniers and Adam Larsson on the team’s leadership group as players gather for Thursday morning’s first official workout of 2026 Kraken Training Camp, pres. by Starbucks. 

The newest leadership picks fill voids left when alternate captain Jaden Schwartz signed with the Colorado Avalanche this summer and the Kraken having yet to replace Yanni Gourde’s alternate captaincy after he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in March 2025.

For Dunn, 29, entering his sixth season with the team as an original Expansion Draft pick from St. Louis, the ascension comes after years of melding into a bigger leadership role. It began his second season, as Dunn – who’d already won a championship with the Blues in 2019 -- embarked on a career best campaign of 14 goals and 64 points while his Kraken went on to make the playoffs and come within a game of making the Western Conference Final.

From there, Dunn and Larsson solidified their spot on the team’s top defensive pairing for years to come. Both they and Eberle are among the few remaining holdovers from the first game of the team’s debut season.

Montour, 32, is entering his third Kraken season having won consecutive Stanley Cup titles with the Florida Panthers just prior to signing a seven-year deal with his current squad. Given that championship pedigree and his ability, like Dunn, to put up stellar two-way performances while remaining accountable off the ice, it seemed only a matter of time his leadership role would be officially sealed once he’d accumulated some time with his new club.

From his first Kraken season, Montour made things happen on the ice. He twice set a team record for points in a game by a defenseman with four, both times against Montreal, while also setting a league record for the fastest overtime goal at four seconds into the extra session.

Eberle, 36, will enter his third season as Kraken captain, coming off a campaign in which he led the team with 26 goals and 54 points. He did that less than a year after overcoming a serious pelvic injury that sidelined him and kept him mostly bedridden for three months in 2024-25.

Then there’s Larsson, 33, the team’s second oldest position player, who has played in every Kraken game except one – snapping an “Ironman” streak at 343 consecutive contests to attend the birth of his daughter, Alba, in April 2024 – and who last season appeared in his 1,000^th career matchup. Larsson, like Eberle, has been part of the team’s leadership group since inception and is known as a quiet, but sly and fun locker room presence. 

As for Beniers, 24, he’ll enter his fifth Kraken season and third as an alternate captain. Beniers won the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie during the team’s 2022-23 playoff campaign and has since morphed into a solid two-way centerman and increasingly vocal team spokesman in the dressing room and in front of the cameras.
