The Kraken returned to Climate Pledge Arena after a three-game road trip to start the season, and while they came out with a bang and scored the first goal of the game – new addition and Spokane native Kailer Yamamoto potted that one – they were unable to repeat the task. After an Avalanche goal early in the second period, followed by a short-handed tally, Seattle couldn’t recover.

Dave Hakstol said the team is doing some good things – but the solution to getting into the win column lies in an all-hands-on-deck approach as everyone will need to “push” to get over the hump of scoring more goals than their opponents.

Let’s look at the game “by the numbers.”

  • In 5-on-5 play, Seattle created 59.63-percent of all shot volume and 64.3-percent of all shot quality. The first period was their strongest with convincing advantages in both measures.
  • Hakstol said his team needs to keep focusing on doing things that are working – in terms of chances, the Kraken generated almost as much shot quality as Colorado (see the scorecard below) and the two teams were also in line when it came to high-danger chances.
  • Some re-designed Kraken lines had positive signs. The line of Yanni Gourde, Eeli Tolvanen, and Andre Burakovsky played the most 5-on-5 time of any Kraken line (7:46) and had the best success tilting the ice with 54.55-percent of all shot attempts.
  • As the Kraken look for pucks to get in the net – the defenders are trying to chip in. In 5-on-5 play, Will Borgen led all skaters with six shot attempts, and Adam Larsson had five – he also had the most shots on goal of any player in this game (6).
  • In terms of puck control, the Kraken started strong (winning 71.4% of all puck battles) but by the end of the game, it was the Avs that had gained the advantage with 70.4-percent of wins on all loose pucks.
  • The penalty kill remains perfect – they haven’t allowed a power play goal against across four games and 13 opportunities.
