Oct. 11, 1979 - Clark Gillies relinquishes the captaincy. Denis Potvin is named the third captain in franchise history.
Oct. 11, 1975 - The Islanders win their home opener 7-0 over the Los Angeles Kings, as rookie Bryan Trottier tallies three goals and two assists.

Oct. 11, 2001 - Peter Laviolette becomes the first coach in league history to start his NHL head coaching career with four straight road wins. The Islanders become the second team in history to start the season with a four-game road winning streak. The team posts a record of 9-0-1-1 in October, for the best start in team history.
