The New York Islanders seemed on the cusp of stealing Thursday's game against the Minnesota Wild, but were upended late in a 3-1 loss at UBS Arena
Scott Mayfield's first-period tally had the Islanders up 1-0 in the third period, but Frédérick Gaudreau (SHG) and Sam Steel scored goals 1:33 apart in the second half of the third period.
With the loss, the Islanders' winless streak reached four games (0-3-1), while their four-game home point streak came to an end.

16:49 - NYI 1, MIN 0 - Scott Mayfield flings a wrist shot on net from the point, where it eludes Filip Gustavsson. The goal is Mayfield's fifth of the season, which ties his career-high, set during the 2019-20 season. Matt Martin and Alex Romanov picked up the assists.

18:42 - MIN 3, NYI 1 - Kaprizov ices the game with an empty-netter for his second point of the night. Zuccarello and Jon Merrill had the assists.
