Rapid Recap: Rangers 5, Islanders 3

The New York Islanders road trip ended on a sour note, as they suffered a 5-3 loss to the New York Rangers on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden.
Kaapo Kakko scored the go-ahead goal for the Rangers with 2:47 to play in the third period, as the Islanders let three separate one-goal leads slip away to their crosstown rivals.
As a result, the Islanders finish their five-game trip with a 1-2-2 record, securing four of a possible 10 points.
Mathew Barzal (1G, 1A), Alex Romanov (1G, 1A) and Anders Lee scored for the Islanders, while Julien Gauthier (1G, 1A), Barclay Goodrow (1G, 2A), Artemi Panarin (PPG), Vincent Trocheck (ENG) and Kakko scored for the Rangers.

Second Period
2:39 - NYI 2, NYR 1 - Mathew Barzal is sprung for a breakaway and makes a forehand-backhand deke on Shesterkin. Josh Bailey picks up the lone assist after forcing a turnover on Kaapo Kakko.

5:30 - NYI 2, NYR 2 - Julien Gauthier is sprung for a breakaway and beats Sorokin five-hole to tie the score. Barclay Goodrow and Ben Harpur with the assists.
8:45 - NYI 3, NYR 2 - Alex Romanov scores his first goal as an Islander, as his slapper from the blue line knuckles past a Hudson Fasching screen and Shesterkin. Barzal with the lone assist.

Third Period
3:00 - NYI 3, NYR 3 - Barclay Goodrow deflects a Gauthier shot off his body and through Sorokin.
17:13 - NYR 4, NYI 3 - K'Andre Miller recovers a loose puck deep in the Islanders zone and feeds Kaapo Kakko across the ice for a backdoor goal. Kakko's goal comes just after a Rangers power play expired. Alexis Lafreniere with the secondary assist.
18:28 - NYR 5, NYI 3 - Vincent Trocheck ices the game with an empty-netter. Goodrow and Lindgren pick up the assists.
