Rapid Recap: Islanders 2, Golden Knights 1 OT

Mathew Barzal sent the New York Islanders into the All-Star Break on a high note, scoring the OT winner in a 2-1 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights at UBS Arena.
Barzal beat Logan Thompson with a wrister with 31.5 seconds to play in the extra frame, giving the Islanders their second win in as many nights.
Semyon Varlamov made a season-high 44 saves in the win, including a penalty shot in overtime, while Logan Thompson made 35 saves on the losing end of a goalie duel. Anders Lee and Will Carrier scored for the Islanders and Golden Knights respectively in regulation.

3:52 - NYI 1, VGK 0 - Kyle Palmieri drives towards the net, but gets tangled up with Brett Howden and falls to the ice. In the process, the puck slides across the middle, where Anders Lee pounces and puts it past Logan Thompson. Brock Nelson picks up the secondary assist.

16:08 - NYI 1, VGK 1 - Will Carrier skates to the front of the net undetected, where Colin Stephenson feeds him from below the goal line. Phil Kessel picks up the secondary assist.

Overtime:
4:28 - NYI 2, VGK 1 - Mathew Barzal beats Thompson with a high wrister from the top of the circles. Anthony Beauvillier picks up the primary assist while Adam Pelech picks up the secondary assist.

NOTEBOOK:

Brock Nelson extended his point streak to six games (4G, 3A)... Kyle Palmieri extended his point streak to four games (5A)... Anders Lee recorded his fifth point in his last five games (4G, 1A). Lee's goal was his 19th of the season, tying Nelson for the team lead... With an opening goal for two consecutive nights, the captain reached 50 career opening goals, surpassing Denis Potvin on the all-time list for third in franchise history... Semyon Varlamov stopped a Will Carrier penalty shot in overtime... After going nearly five years without a penalty shot against, the Islanders have had two against them in the past four games... Matt Martin had a game-high six hits... Adam Pelech played a game-high 26:41... Barzal and Nelson each had a team-high six shots on goal... Nelson and Scott Mayfield each had a team-high nine shot attempts.

GOALTENDING BATTLE:

Semyon Varlamov stopped 44 of 45 in the win.
Logan Thompson stopped 35 of 37 in the overtime loss.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

The Islanders power play went 0-for-1 and the penalty kill went 2-for-2.
