The New York Islanders announced today that the club has signed forward Mitchell Chaffee to a one-year contract.
Chaffee, 28, recorded one assist in 11 games for the Tampa Bay Lightning last season. He spent the majority of the year with the club’s American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, tallying 57 points (24 goals, 33 assists) in 54 games. He also scored one goal in two Calder Cup playoff games.
In parts of four NHL seasons with the Lightning and Minnesota Wild, Chaffee has totaled 26 points (16 goals, 10 assists) and 257 hits in 109 career games. He’s also skated in nine Stanley Cup Playoff games with Tampa, scoring one goal.
A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Chaffee has played 177 AHL games with Syracuse and the Iowa Wild over the past five seasons, registering 146 points (66 goals, 80 assists). He established AHL career highs in games played, goals, assists and points in 2025-26 with the Crunch.
Prior to his professional career, Chaffee scored 95 points (47 goals, 48 assists) in 109 games over three seasons with the University of Massachusetts (2017-20), serving as a team co-captain from 2019-20. He also played for the Bloomington Thunder and Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League (USHL), recording 29 points (15 goals, 14 assists) in 103 games.
