November was Hockey Fights Cancer month in the NHL, one of the league's most meaningful initiatives.
In honor of the effort, VGK Insider Gary Lawless wrote an essay for last week's episode of Knight Life on AT&T SportsNet. That essay is included below, along with the video from Knight Life.

Gary Lawless - Hockey Fights Cancer

Knight Life airs weekly on Fridays either before the pregame show or at 6 p.m. PT if there is no game.
Hockey is the most emotional of sports. The penalties; slashing, hooking, roughing, fighting tell the story. The game runs on hate.
But once the competition is set aside, love comes rushing in. No one sticks together more than hockey folk. And every November, hockey unites in the fight of our lives. Against cancer.
All 32 teams in the NHL hold their own Hockey Fights Cancer night. Boards get a coat of lavender paint. Coaches and broadcasters don ties and scarves in that same shade.
Seats are appointed with HFC signs. Every fan can indelibly fill in a name. A mother, brother, father, sister, son, daughter, neighbor, friend or relative for whom they fight.
Lynn fights for Cheryl.
Lisa fights for Peggy.
Dave fights for Linda.
We fight for Neil.
We fight for early detection.
We fight for Izzy.
We fight for Moms and Dads.
We fight for Wes and Jerry.
Abby fights for Karen.
We fight for Jack, Steve, and Shirley.
Desiree fights for Serena and all kids fighting cancer.
Kristen fights for three-time cancer survivor Dawn.
Emily fights for Amy.
Tyler fights for Jessica.
The Silver Knights fight for Manny.
Bark Andre fights for everyone.
Since 1998 over $30 Million has been raised by Hockey Fights Cancer. It's one of the league's most successful and compassionate initiatives.
In Vegas, the hockey community has shown again and again their willingness to stand up for one another. No matter the opponent.
Keep fighting, Vegas. Keep fighting everyone.
