post-10.11

The Philadelphia Flyers lost to the Carolina Hurricanes, 4-1, at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Sunday evening. The Flyers are winless through seven games (0-5-2). Carolina has won each of its last five games.

The first period was scoreless. The Flyers were outshot, 11-5, but kept most of the play to the outside. Philly had a couple of looks at the net but missed the net four times and got blocked two other times among 11 attempts. It was a good neutral zone defensive period for the Flyers.

The game remained scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the middle frame, then the teams combined for four rapid-fire goals. Unfortunately, three belonged to the Hurricanes.

Midway through the second period, Andrei Svechnikov (4th) turned a Flyers neutral zone turnover into a 1-0 lead for Carolina. Shayne Gostisbehere (2nd) struck about three minutes later for a 2-0 edge. Christian Dvorak (1st) got a goal back on a deflection. However, Sebastian Aho (6th) quickly restored a two-goal margin for Carolina.

Mark Jankowski (4th) added an extra insurance goal in the third period. He has scored in four straight games.

Joseph Woll made 26 saves on 30 shots.

Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 18 of 19 shots.

The Flyers went 0-for-3 on the power play. They were 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

The Flyers placed Travis Konecny (lower body) on injured reserve. They recalled defenseman Oliver Bonk from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

1ST PERIOD

Mark Jankowski, with goals in three straight matches, had the game's first scoring chance. Woll made the save. Carolina also had the second shot.

Christian Dvorak fired a wrist shot on net with traffic in front. It was Philly's first shot on goal of the game at 5:01. Two shifts later, Woll stopped a Shayne Gostisbehere shot off a drop pass from Taylor Hall.

Oliver Bonk got a marginal cross-checking minor at 11:59. Carolina went to the game's first power play. As the penalty was about to expire -- Philly had the same four-man unit on the ice for the entire two minutes -- Woll stopped Jackson Blake.

Bonk went right back to the box at 14:37 for hooking Logan Stankoven. Nick Seeler missed the net wide on a shorthanded rush after a feed from Sean Couturier. Nikolaj Ehlers had a good look but missed the net. After a clearing play, Logan Stankoven went offside on re-entry.

Will Carrier took Carolina's first penalty, tripping Bunting at 17:12. The Flyers lost two faceoffs. Finally, Philly gained entry. Denver Barkey and Trevor Zegras had looks but couldn't find the mark. As the penalty expired, Woll misplayed a puck and had to scramble for a save.

2ND PERIOD

For the second straight game, Owen Tippett rang a shot off the goal post.

Foerster went to the net for a scoring chance. He couldn't finish it, but the Flyers drew a holding penalty on Carrier at 1:11. Woll fought off a shorthanded chance for Stankoven after Jiricek was beaten on the rush. Michkov went offside on a rush attempt.

The Flyers paid dearly for a neutral zone turnover that led to a 2-on-1 and a Carolina goal. Svechnikov beat Woll to the top corner for a 1-0 lead at 10:16. Sean Walker had the lone assist.

Zegras turned the puck over inside the Carolina blueline. On a 2-on-1 counter, Gostisbehere scored off an Aho feed. Carrier had the secondary assist at 13:45.

Dvorak got the Flyers on the board at 15:26. Barkey won a battle for the puck and made a low-to-high play to Seeler. Dvorak deflected the point shot home.

One shift later, Carolina came through the middle after winning the puck in the neutral zone. Aho beat Woll through the five-hole at 16:54. The assists went to Carrier and Svechnikov.

3RD PERIOD

Woll stopped an early chance for Aho. The Flyers' 4th line had Philadelphia's first good shift at the other end.

The Dvorak line created a near goal for Travis Sanheim. Jaccob Slavin swept the puck away after it got behind Kochetkov. A few minutes later, Gostisbehere helped the goalie on a drive from Bonk.

Michkov set up a Grade A chance for Noah Cates. Kochetkov made the save.

Svechnikov went off for hooking Seeler at 6:29. Jiricek fired a shot on net. Eric Robinson started a counterattack later in the kill. Woll knocked aside a K'Andre Miller shot. Carolina killed off the rest with authority.

At 10:18, Foerster took an undisciplined cross-checking penalty, putting the Flyers shorthanded down by two goals. Philly survived. With play back to 5-on-5, Woll denied a Stankoven deflection of a Miller shot.

The Flyers lost a battle down low. Scoring in his fourth straight game, Jankowski was alone in the slot and scored at 15:09. Martinook earned the lone assist.

Sanheim went off for hooking at 15:44. Carolina went to its fourth power play. Carolina moved the puck around the perimeter.

POSTGAME RAV4 (RAV4 Things Revisited)

1. Puck management

The Flyers hurt themselves with turnovers that led to high-danger chances and Carolina goals after avoiding them for most of the opening 30 minutes of the game.

2. East-west plays

This was less of a problem for the Flyers than in the Boston game. Nevertheless, Carolina outskated Philly overall.

3. Entries and retrievals

The Flyers were better in pockets of the game, but it was not sustained.

4. The physical game

Philly outhit Carolina 20-13 in this game.
