Flyers Recess

PHILADELPHIA (October 20, 2022) -Earlier this month, the Philadelphia Flyers held the first-ever Flyers Recess assembly at John Glenn Elementary School in Pine Hill, N.J., and today, the Flyers are opening applications for other local elementary schools to host the new, fun-filled event. Flyers Recess is a free school assembly program designed to help local kids stay healthy and active while learning important life skills like teamwork and determination.

Through the Flyers Recess program, kids participate in an interactive, gameshow-style assembly where they get to practice hockey skills with new, Flyers-themed equipment donated by the Flyers organization. Each event starts with a hype video including messages from current Flyers players and also includes appearances from Flyers in-arena host Everett Jackson, the Flyers Ice Team, Flyers Alumni members, and of course, Gritty. Students put their trivia skills to the test, face-off in challenges with former Flyers players, and get active by trying a hand at Gritty's favorite exercises. In addition to the assembly, each participating school's Physical Education department receives equipment and a manual to launch a street hockey curriculum in their PE classes, and participating students also receive two complimentary tickets to a Flyers game this season.

"The Flyers Recess Assembly was a great time for the whole school!" said Shaun Woerner, PE Teacher at John Glenn Elementary School. "I can't wait to use the new equipment with my students. The new sticks, nets, balls, and jerseys will take my hockey unit to the next level."

"The Philadelphia Flyers have a proud history of giving back to local communities throughout the Philadelphia region, and the Flyers Recess program is a great way to build on that legacy by helping kids stay healthy and active," said Valerie Camillo, President and CEO of Spectacor Sports and Entertainment. "Growing the game is one of our organization's top priorities because we know that hockey is more than just a fun sport to play - it's also an opportunity for kids to learn great life lessons about teamwork and determination. That's what this program is all about, and we're excited to partner with more schools throughout the Philadelphia area."
