WHAT'S NEXT
The Devils continue their homestand and face the New York Rangers on Tuesday. The game can be seen on MSG+ 2 and heard on the Devils Hockey Network, including right here at NewJerseyDevils.com. Puck drop is 7:08 p.m. ET.
"No update," Devils head coach Lindy Ruff said of Jack Hughes. "Obviously, left the game with a lower body injury."
Down 3-1, the Devils controlled the play early in the third. Through the first three minutes of the frame, shots on goal were 7-0 for New Jersey.
The persistence paid off as a couple minutes later, Tomas Tatar converted a feed from Andreas Johnsson top corner to make it a one-goal game.
Palmieri restored the Islanders' two-goal lead with a wrist shot from the right circle that eluded Daws blocker side just off the ice late in the game.
Nico Hischier added a goal with 1:06 to go in the third to make things interesting and 20 seconds later very nearly tied it, just missing the open side of the net off the rush.
"We got skating, generated some opportunities, had a good look with 30 seconds left to tie the game," Ruff stated.
Islanders carried the play early on, outshooting the Devils 9-3 through the first eight minutes of the period but the first power play went to New Jersey as Noah Dobson was sent off for cross-checking in a retaliatory penalty.
Islanders killed off the penalty and struck for the game's first goal just over a minute later.
Kyle Palmieri threaded a pass to J-G Pageau on a two-on-one and Pageau fired the puck five-hole to put the visitors in front 1-0.
Late in the first, Jesper Boqvist was called for tripping to give the Islanders a power play and it only took the Isles 20 seconds to strike for a goal and double their lead.
Anders Lee made a nice move at the top of the crease before firing a shot that was stopped by Nico Daws. Pageau was at the doorstep to put in the rebound, however.
After one, shots on goal were 14-10 for the Islanders.
"I thought we were really flat in the first period, Maybe we had a pity party from the night before where we felt pretty bad about how that game ended," said Ruff.
Hischier agreed with his coach.
"Definitely it was still in our head. We started the same way. It should not happen. We should be professional enough to let that sleep, the game yesterday, and come out strong."
Early in the second, Oliver Wahlstrom took out Hughes in the corner. P.K. Subban jumped Wahlstrom, getting two for instigating, five for fighting, a 10-minute misconduct and a game misconduct.
"I like that," Ruff said of Subban's response. "You don't know for sure what the hit looked like but anytime someone steps in, that's the type of team spirit you want."
Hughes came out and tested his knee but it was a short shift and he went back down the tunnel.
Devils killed off the Subban penalty but several minutes later there was another Islanders power play following a Ty Smith tripping minor.
The Smith penalty was also killed off, but with five minutes left in the period, Pageau completed the natural hat trick with a quick redirection at the top of the crease, making it 3-0 Islanders.
Just over a minute later, Boqvist deflected a point blast from Damon Severson to get a goal back, drawing the Devils back within a pair.
After two, shots on goal were 21-15 for the Islanders.
"Give a lot of credit to what we did in the third period but it's not enough, one period like that. But we've got to take a lot of things out of that third period," said Hischier.
"We can't just play 20 minutes or 40 minutes. It's important we not panic and have a game we can trust. Momentum's going to shift every game. Consistent game you can bring even if the other team is pushing, you can be sharp."
