NEW YORK - The New Jersey Devils were on the road Wednesday night for their first preseason game away from Prudential Center. At Madison Square Garden, the Devils fell 4-3 in OT to their rivals the New York Rangers.
Here are 10 takeaways from the matchup:

  1. Two brothers went up against each other at MSG. On a professional tryout with the Devils, Jimmy Hayes faced off against his younger brother, Kevin, who plays for the Rangers. Jimmy played on the Devils' third line with Blake Pietila and Michael McLeod. The New Jersey Hayes brother came out on top in the brother vs. brother matchup - he picked up a goal and an assist in the game, while younger brother Jimmy scored a goal for the Rangers.

    2. Cory Schneider played the first 31:16 of the game, getting his feet wet for the NHL regular season. Schneider stopped 14 of 17 shots, including 10 of the 11 he faced in the first period.
    3. Return of the faceoff violation! Teams are still learning to adjust to the stricter enforcement of Rule 76. The faceoff violation penalty was called four times during the game. Refs have been told to call any violations they see at the faceoff dot on a stricter basis, making sure the slashing and sneaky footwork do not make their way into an otherwise fair draw. Three of the four violations were handed down to the Rangers.
    4. Pavel Zacha made his preseason debut. He may also be ready for the baseball diamond … Zacha tipped a loose puck out of the air and behind Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist. It was his first goal of the preseason and tied the game at 1.

    5. After a slow night Monday and a sluggish start in Wednesday's matchup, the Devils' power play finally broke through. Brian Gibbons is the proud owner of the Devils' first preseason power play goal, assisted by Hayes and Drew Stafford.
    6. Speaking of Stafford, he made his debut in a Devils uniform after signing a one year deal this offseason. Stafford had a successful debut, picking up assists on two of the Devils' goals.

    7. You know hockey's back when there's a fight in a Devils-Rangers game. Nick Lappin dropped the gloves in the second period and received a five-minute penalty for fighting. Playing on the fourth line with Ben Thomson and Austin Cangelosi, Lappin fought Ranger Matt Pumpel in the second period.

    8. The matchup between the rivals was fairly even when it came to shot total. New Jersey and New York each finished with 29 SOG.
    9. This was the first of two matchups in the preseason between the Devils and Rangers. The two clubs will meet again on Saturday, Sept. 23, on Devils ice.
    10. You won't have to wait long before seeing the Devils in action again. New Jersey is on the road in Montreal to take on the Canadiens Thursday night - though it will largely be a different roster from the one that traveled to Manhattan.
