PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, NJ - Ahead of today's game, Devils head coach Lindy Ruff had a couple of injury updates, one affecting this contest and another for games later this week.
First, Ruff noted that Jesper Bratt will return after missing Saturday's game with an illness.
"He will be available today," said Ruff. "We've got other guys that are fighting the flu and we'll have some game time decisions."
He did add that the non-COVID virus that hit Bratt has started to spread its way around the team.
"In all likelihood, we'll have somebody else out today, too," he said.
The other update was on goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood, who has been practicing with the team for the past few weeks.
"The plan for Mackenzie -- he's been practicing with us -- is for him to play Tuesday and Friday," stated Ruff. "That's great news for us. He's feeling well enough to play and we're happy to have him back."
Tuesday's game is in Ottawa while Friday will be back at Prudential Center against these same Red Wings.
READY FOR DETROIT
The Red Wings are a team that's been struggling as of late with four losses in their last five games and coming off a blowout 7-2 loss to Pittsburgh yesterday in their final home game of the season. But Ruff cautioned against taking the Wings lightly.
"We're looking at a team that beat us in Detroit pretty handily - though we were quite shorthanded in that game there."
The Devils head coach added that despite the overtime loss on Saturday, there were a lot of positives which the club needs to take into today.
"We have to build off the positives that we had in yesterday's game. We don't like the way it finished but we have to use that as a platform on how we need to play if we're going to be successful right now.
"Carolina knew they were in a game yesterday. They got a little fortunate on their goal that went on the inside of Bahl's leg but sometimes you get the bounces. Second goal I thought we could have defended better.
"We competed defensively really hard. Special teams we won and that's going to be important again today."
CAPTAIN NICO
With 35 points in his last 30 games, Devils captain Nico Hischier has been a bright spot for the Devils in this second half of the season.
"I spoke about him last night. He's given us everything. He's a leader on our power play, leader on our penalty killing. Offensively, these last 30-some games he's been over a point-per-game guy for us," said Ruff.
"This last road trip, playing all the top lines and going head-to-head with all their best people."
Ruff added that Hischier's ability to stay healthy has helped him to find another level in his game.
"We've had the best hockey out of him this year. Especially over the last 50 games. Last year was nothing but come back and play, get hurt, come back and play, get hurt again. He takes a puck to the face and still made sure he got back and played and blocked shots. The message he sends to his teammates about how to compete and win is something that's incredible inside our dressing room."

PREVIEW

DEVILS (27-43-8) vs. RED WINGS (30-39-10)
TV: 1:00 p.m. ET; Televised on MSG+ 2
Head-to-Head
This is the first time the Devils and Red Wings have played at Prudential Center since February 13, 2020 when New Jersey won 4-1. The two sides met earlier this season in Detroit, with the Red Wings winning 5-2 at Little Caesars Arena.
The two teams will meet again in less than a week, next Friday once again at Prudential Center.
Devils team scope:
Coming off a 3-1-1 road trip, the Devils netted a tie and a loss on the first two games of this homestand. They are winless in their last six games at home, with a record of 0-4-2 which is a contrast to both winning three in a row before that slump and the nine straight losses away from home which occurred prior to the successful roadie.
Jesper Bratt continues to lead the team in points with 70 in 72 games. Damon Severson is tops among Devils blueliners with 44 points in 76 contests.
The Devils sit fifth-last in the NHL with 62 points, one behind Chicago.
Red Wings team scope:
Detroit has lost four of its last five games and have played five of their last six away from home with the only exception being Saturday's 7-2 loss to Pittsburgh at Little Caesars Arena.
Dylan Larkin leads the Red Wings in scoring with 69 points in 71 games. He also leads the club in goals with 31. Goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic leads the way for the Wings with 50 starts on the season. He is 19-23-9 with a 3.37 goals-against average and .900 save percentage.
Detroit is 12th in the Eastern Conference, three points behind Buffalo. They are eight points behind the Devils. The Wings only have three games left on their schedule and two are at Prudential Center: Sunday, Tuesday (at Toronto) and Friday.
By the Numbers:
Nico Hischier leads the Devils in the month of April with 11 points (three goals) in 11 games. ... Nikita Okhotiuk has a two-game scoring streak with a goal in his NHL debut on Thursday against Buffalo and an assist on Saturday against Carolina. ... Yegor Sharangovich leads the Devils in goals in April with seven.
