Laine's 'Pat trick'

What They're Saying

The Blue Jackets have found Saturday night all right for fighting, perhaps both literally and figuratively.
Columbus won its fourth consecutive Saturday game two days ago, coming from a 2-0 deficit to post a 5-3 victory over San Jose. Once Mathieu Olivier dropped the gloves on the ensuing faceoff after the Sharks' second goal early in the middle period, the Blue Jackets controlled play from there.
"It was good timing, and thankfully he responded well to it and we got ourselves a big win tonight," Olivier said. "You hope it works. Sometimes it doesn't, but I believe we responded well to it. That's something that for our team is a type of win, coming back after a tough start, it's really good for our group. I think after (Thursday's 5-3 loss) against Anaheim, we needed a response game like that. We definitely rose to the challenge."
The opening period wasn't kind to Columbus, which was on the wrong end of a 15-2 shots on goal margin and 15-11 disadvantage in shot attempts at 5-on-5. In the last 40 minutes, though, Columbus had a 27-10 edge in shots on goal and a 38-17 advantage in shot attempts at 5-on-5.
Add in two-point performances from five players -- Gaudreau, Patrik Laine, Gustav Nyquist, Kent Johnson and Nick Blankenburg -- and Columbus found a winning formula as the game went on.
"Obviously the first wasn't the start we were looking for," head coach Brad Larsen said. "We made a little switch there with some lines and seemed to find ourselves a bit in the second. We just went to work and simplified. We started executing better. That's one thing we didn't do well in the first. We were missing passes. We were a day late and a dollar short in some execution stuff. It got better and we found a rhythm a little bit in the last two. It was a good win for these guys."

Know The Foe: Calgary Flames

Head coach:Darryl Sutter (Third season)
Season Stats:Goals per game: 3.11 (17th) | Scoring defense: 2.96 (14th) | PP: 20.0 percent (23rd) | PK: 82.7 percent (6th)
The narrative: The loss of Gaudreau to Columbus has changed the complexion of the Flames, who also reworked the squad by getting Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weegar from Florida in exchange for Matthew Tkachuk. But breaking up one of the top lines in hockey (Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Elias Lindholm) has resulted in a team that has taken some time to get on the same page, and the Flames are currently in a tight battle when it comes to returning to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
2022-23 leaders: Lindholm has continued to produce at a high level even without his former running mates, as the 28-year-old Swede leads the Flames with 42 points on 14 goals and 28 assists. Tyler Toffoli is next with a 17-23-40 line, while free-agent signing Nazem Kadri leads the team with 18 goals (nine on the power play) among his 36 points. Rasmus Andersson is the top-scoring defenseman with a 7-26-33 line, while Huberdeau has posted nine goals and 23 assists for 32 points.
In net, Jacob Markstrom has started 32 games thus far and leads the way with a 13-12-5 record, 2.82 GAA and .895 save percentage. Backup Dan Vladar is 9-4-4.
What's new:As we said, it's a new-look squad with Huberdeau, Kadri and Weegar (1-11-12 in 46 games) the big additions to replace Gaudreau and Tkachuk. The offense is starting to pick up, though the Flames have been boom or bust of late, with a pair of six-goal games in the last four contests and a pair of one-goal games as well. Calgary is coming off a 6-3 beating of Tampa Bay and in all is 9-4-3 in its last 16 games while averaging 3.44 goals per game in that span.
Trending: Columbus snapped a six-game losing streak in the series Dec. 9 with a 3-1 victory over the Flames in Nationwide Arena. The Blue Jackets will be looking for their first win in the Saddledome since a 1-0 overtime win Nov. 22, 2017.

3 Keys to the Game

Big guns firing: The Blue Jackets' top players led the way against San Jose on Saturday night and are a key to winning just about any game. Could chemistry be building on the top line of Gaudreau, Laine and Jack Roslovic?
Keep it simple: The Jackets have been at their best this season when keeping it simply and playing with energy. That's an especially important winning factor on the road.
Use the energy: Columbus took advantage of an energetic building Saturday night on the way to a win; can it do the same in what should be a fired up Saddledome, even if most of those fans will be pulling against the Jackets?

3 Stats to Know
  • Roslovic has a five-game point streak (1-5-6) and a 3-17-20 line in the last 25 games, while Laine has a 4-5-9 line in the last seven games.
  • With nine goals, Kirill Marchenko has the second most tallies ever by a CBJ player in the first 22 games of his career (Matt Calvert, 10, 2011).
  • Milestone watch: Gustav Nyquist is two games from 700 for his NHL career (174-249-423, 698 GP). … With 624 games played in union blue, Boone Jenner is three games from tying Cam Atkinson (627) for the second-most games played in CBJ history.
Who's Hot
