Players To Watch 👀

Stars forward Rantanen has recorded 10 points (2-8—10) in his last nine games, dating back to Jan. 27 against the St. Louis Blues. In all, Rantanen has tallied 73 points (21-52—73) in 58 games played this season, ranking third on the team in scoring despite missing 18 games earlier this year. His 52 assists this season rank second among Stars skaters while ranking tied for 18th in the NHL. He is 10 assists shy of matching his career-high of 62 assists that he set in 2023-24. Of Rantanen's 73 points, 33 (6-27—33) have come on the power-play, which ranks third on the team and tied for the seventh-best mark in the League entering play Friday. Rantanen is also playing at over a point-per-game pace at home this season, totaling 34 points (8-26—34) in 26 games played at the American Airlines Center. His 1.31 points per game at home this season ranked 12th in the NHL entering play Friday. Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon scored his 50th goal of this season in Colorado's last game on April 1 against the Vancouver Canucks. His 50 goals top the NHL entering play Friday. MacKinnon enters Saturday's contest having put up seven points (5-2—7) in his last five games played, dating back to March 24 against the Pittsburgh Penguins. If he were to score a goal in Saturday's game, MacKinnon would match his career-high of 51 goals in a single season that he set in 2023-24. In all, MacKinnon has posted 121 points (50-71—121) through 73 games played this season, leading the team and ranking third in the NHL entering play Friday. This year marks the fourth consecutive season that he has recorded over 100 points. In his career against Dallas, MacKinnon has notched 52 points (19-33—52) in 47 games played, carrying a plus-minus rating of +26 and averaging 1.11 points per game. Entering Saturday's matchup, MacKinnon rides a nine-game point streak against the Stars, earning 17 points (5-12—17) during that span.

First Shift 🏒

The genius of Glen Gulutzan’s moves Thursday night were how simple they were.

The Stars coach remembered the “Que-Bäck” line of Oskar Bäck with Mavrik Bourque and Justin Hryckowian having several great games earlier in the season and thought his team could use a large dose of that. So he reunited that trio and then put Arttu Hyry and Adam Erne as the key to a fourth line in a 7-11 format, and it all clicked.

“I really liked Bourquie, Ritzy and Bakker, I thought they had a really strong game,” Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said. “Our reloads, our commitment to physicality in all three zone, our intensity was up. It was nothing really structurally, we just executed the way we were playing in the past.”

Hryckowian has been a revelation after earning rookie of the year in the AHL last season, while Bourque has stepped forward after being League MVP two years ago. Gulutzan is in his first year with the Stars, but he has seen progress from both.

“Confidence is a big thing and all three are getting more confidence,” Gulutzan said, saying Bourque was noticeably good. “I thought he was probably our best player…him or (Jake Oettinger). He’s just getting stronger and more comfortable and more confident. You can see his talent coming out.”

Then mix in the combination of Erne and Hyry and you had a lot of push coming from the third and fourth lines. Hyry and Erne each had a goal and an assist in a 3-0 win over Winnipeg, and the duo said they feel they have chemistry. That’s odd for a 24-year-old rookie from Finland and a 30-year-old veteran tough guy, but there are similarities. Both are smart and energetic, and both like to play simple hockey.

“Absolutely, I think it's always good playing with him,” Erne said. “It’s simple. We put the puck in. We try to go get it, so we’re able to do a couple plays there between icing. It's always nice to get on the score sheet.”

Hyry said he too enjoys their brand of hockey.

“I feel like every game you’re a little more ready every day you stay up here,” Hyry said. “I think it's just unbelievable that I get to play here, game after game.”

Erne said the fact they kept rotating players on their line ended up being a good thing.

“You get out there with guys that you haven’t been out there with a lot,” Erne said, “Some guys that are high-end guys. They’re fun to play with. We had a couple shifts with Mikko, and I think we scored on that shift. It is what it is. We’re happy to be out there with whoever we can be out there with.”

Gulutzan said Friday that he will probably stick with the 7-11 format in a game against top-seeded Colorado on Saturday. That said, attitude is more important than the alignment, he said.

“It gives you some energy for the group and it forces all guys to kind of do the same thing,” Gulutzan said. “Your lines are different a lot of time, so everybody has to look the same. You mix and match and you have to find some chemistry.”

He Said It 📢

“They’re hard to come by. It takes a lot of luck and good play in front of you, which I had both tonight…Lately, I’ve been trying to work on just staying in it the whole game. It’s pretty easy to doze off and next thing you know, it’s in the back of your net. Just trying to stay focused and if I’m not getting shots, I’m trying to simulate things in my head and try to stay in it. I thought I did a good job of that. You knew they were going to push so I just tried to make a few timely saves so it didn’t get close.”
