Series: 0-0 (Game 1)

The Stars are the underdogs, and they're fine with that.
In starting against the Pacific Division champion Flames - in Calgary - Dallas has a tall order. However, the Stars have been at their best when the odds have been against them, so they seem pretty comfortable in the role.
"We've got a lot of confidence in this group when it comes to meaningful games and playing tough opponents," Stars forward Tyler Seguin said. "It's more the lower seeds we have trouble with for some reason."
Calgary comes in with the best goal differential in the Western Conference at plus-85, while the Stars are the only playoff team with a negative goal differential at minus-8, so there are definitely experts who see the Flames as heavy favorites. The Stars say they can't think that way.

'This is what we've been waiting for'

"We're not going to sit back and say that a lot of people have Calgary winning the series," forward Jason Robertson said. "I think everyone in that locker room knows what's at stake. We played 82 games this season, just like them, to get to this spot. We're going to play hard. We're going to fight hard."
In fact, the respect for the Flames is a good thing. Dallas has played its best against good opponents and seems to be motivated by the challenge of facing the NHL's best teams.

'Excited to get this thing going'

"They've been really good," Stars defenseman John Klingberg said. "We've been inconsistent, up and down in the regular season. None of that matters now. It's best out of seven, first to four [wins]. I really feel like our team is built for the playoffs."

What to watch

The Flames' top line of Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Tkachuk and Elias Lindholm has been a handful all year, combining for 124 goals, so the Stars will have to put a lot of focus on stopping that trio. But while getting the right matchup from the forward ranks or the defensemen will be key, Dallas also believes it can be effective by possessing the puck and playing in the offensive zone.
"If you try to limit their time in the zone and at the same time, try to be as close to them as you can and not take penalties, try to play with the puck against them more than they have the puck, that's maybe going to frustrate them a little bit," Klingberg said. "They're a good team. It's not just them but obviously you focus on them a little bit more. I think if you stick to your game, and we feel we have a really good game, it should work out."
The trio has been together all season, but they say they're still learning about one another.
"I didn't know who I was going to be playing with, but when you're playing with guys like that, it makes it a lot easier for me," Tkachuk said. "We've just had really good chemistry so far. The first few preseason games, we clicked right away. Once the season started, we've kept it going ever since."
Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen said: "We need to play them hard every shift. It's going to be hard. Three great players playing with each other, they have great chemistry."

He said it

"I've been waiting for it for a while. It's the game. It's why you play the game. It's a long season. That's the biggest thing. You're not a proven playoff team until you make it several years in a row and then have success. If you look at the history of champions, that's how they get there. We're all excited because we made playoffs. Now you try to take the next step. Try and win a game." -- Flames coach Darryl Sutter on how he views the first game of the playoffs
