Ottawa Senators’ Head Coach Travis Green and President of Hockey Operations & General Manager Steve Staios met with the media on Monday, May 5 at the conclusion of the 2024-25 NHL Season.
Travis Green and Steve Staios spoke to media together, answering questions regarding their vision for the future of the team as well as assessing the team’s 2024-25 season. Staios began the availability by saying:
“Our team took a good step forward this season. I’ve said it before but it’s just the first step. Earned the right to play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs — a necessary step in our growth. When I talk about improvement, I think it’s both on and off the ice.”
Staios continued, crediting Green’s coaching ability and the team’s willingness to improve.
“The first thing we said was internal growth for this group and to a man they all improved. To their credit, Travis has the ability to get the best out of these players. That’s one way I think that we can continue to improve. I think the experience of the season and the way that we played should lend to some confidence for our group moving into next year.”
Green echoed Staios’ praise of the team’s improvement.
“Internally, I thought our players improved not only from over last summer but the course of the season. I think it’s important that we continue to improve, that it’s not status quo. As coaches, as an organization, we push our players to have a growth mindset of getting better. How you left today isn’t going to be acceptable if you just come back the same.”
The Senators, both players and staff, showed a dedication to improvement on their journey to making the playoffs this season. Steve Staios acknowledged this while also noting that the hard work doesn’t stop there.
“Taking the step to where we got to was challenging. Our players stepped up to it, coaching staff did — now is the real hard part. Now, to get into contending with these teams, the attention to detail and the work has to be done. But we’ve set the culture. One thing I think we can be proud of is we talked a lot about culture, and you can’t fabricate culture, you have to live it.”
