OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators announced today that defenseman Thomas Chabot has been named the 11th captain in franchise history. Chabot, 29, has been with the Senators organization for more than ten years. He played his first NHL game at the start of the 2016–17 season, before returning to the junior ranks to play one final season. He made the jump to the pros in October 2017.
“Thomas exemplifies everything we want in an Ottawa Senator,” said Senators president of hockey operations and general manager Steve Staios. “He’s commited to the city and to the organization. He puts the team first.”
A Ste-Marie-de-Beauce, QC, native, Chabot has skated in 569 games for his NHL career over which he has recorded 335 points (78 goals, 257 assists) and 270 penalty minutes.
Chabot currently ranks 13th in Senators history in games played. Among defensemen who have played for the team since 1992, he ranks third in goals, assists, and points.
“ We’ve always said it. Ottawa feels like home. It really does,” said Chabot. “ We bought our first house here. We started our family here. Becoming captain here is a huge honour. ”
Chabot will succeed Laurie Boschman (1992-93), Gord Dineen, Mark Lamb and Brad Shaw (1993-94 rotation), Randy Cunneyworth (1994 to 1998), Alexei Yashin (1998-99), Daniel Alfredsson (1999 to 2013), Jason Spezza (2013-14), Erik Karlsson (2014 to 2018) and Brady Tkachuk (2021 to 2026) as team captain.
Chabot’s role as team captain will see him supported by alternates Claude Giroux, Jake Sanderson and Tim Stützle.
