The NHL closed the book on the 2016-17 season and began looking ahead toward 2017-18 when the free agency signing period began Saturday. The 31 teams, including the Vegas Golden Knights, can make moves to shape their rosters for the upcoming season, which begins Oct. 4.

July 1, 2015:The
Pittsburgh Penguins land a key member
of their back-to-back Stanley Cup-winning teams when they acquire forward Phil Kessel in a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
June 30, 1992:
The trade sending
Eric Lindros
to the Philadelphia Flyerrs from the Quebec Nordiques is ruled valid by an arbitrator.
June 29, 2016:
In the span of 23 minutes,
the NHL sees two major trades, one that sends Nashville Predators defenseman Shea Weber to the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman P.K. Subban, and the re-signing of center Steven Stamkos by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

June 28, 1964: The Boston Bruins draft a 16-year-old goaltender named
Ken Dryden
in the third round (No. 14) and
then trade him to the Montreal Canadiens
. Dryden goes on to help the Canadiens win the Stanley Cup six times in the 1970s.
June 27, 2014:Aaron Ekblad
becomes the first defenseman
since Erik Johnson in 2006 to be selected No. 1 in the NHL Draft when he's chosen by the Florida Panthers.
June 26, 2004: Future stars Alex Ovechkin (Washington Capitals) and Evgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh Penguins) are
chosen with the first two picks in the NHL Draft.
June 25, 1997: The NHL continues its expansion from a
21-team league in 1991 to 30 teams
by 2000 when it officially approves the addition of four teams during the next three years.
