Super 16: Bruins, Blues continue strong showings before pause

The NHL season is on pause because of concerns surrounding the coronavirus, but the Super 16 continues, at least for this week, with a minor change from last week.

There were no games played since the last Super 16 rankings, but those were tabulated before the final games prior to the pause had concluded last Wednesday. Two of the 13 participating staff members thought enough of those results to change their votes this week.
That's how the Winnipeg Jets moved into the Super 16, knocking the New York Islanders out.
As for the difference in the rest of the Super 16 this week, the hits and misses are based on the breadth of the season, rather than on what happens week to week.
As always, to create the power rankings, each of the 13 participating staff members puts together his or her version of what the Super 16 should look like. Those are submitted, and a point total is assigned to each.
The team picked first is given 16 points, second gets 15, third gets 14 and so on down to No. 16, which gets one point.
Here is the latest Super 16:

1. Boston Bruins (44-14-12)

Total points: 207
Last week: No. 1
Hit: The Bruins are first in the League in points (100), regulation wins (38), goals against (167) and nonshootout goal differential (plus-60).
Miss:They are 0-7 in the shootout.

2. St. Louis Blues (42-19-10)

Total points: 193
Last week:No. 2
Hit:The Blues lead the League in goals scored by defensemen (45). They also lead the NHL in wins (19) and points (39) in games that are tied after the first period (19-7-1).
Miss:They are 18th in the League on the penalty kill at 79.3 percent.

3. Tampa Bay Lightning (43-21-6)

Total points: 179
Last week: No. 3
Hit:The Lightning lead the NHL in goals per game (3.47).
Miss:They have been shorthanded 231 times, the third-most in the NHL. Their penalty kill is 81.4 percent, tied for 13th with the Colorado Avalanche.

4. Colorado Avalanche (42-20-8)

Total points: 163
Last week:No. 4
Hit: Nathan MacKinnon is fifth in the NHL with 93 points (35 goals, 58 assists) in 69 games. The center is also first with 318 shots on goal, seven more than Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin.
Miss: MacKinnon has 43 more points than any other Avalanche player (defenseman Cale Makar, 50), and 48 more than any other forward (Andre Burakovsky, 45).

5. Philadelphia Flyers (41-21-7)

Total points: 150
Last week:No. 5
Hit:Since Jan. 8, the Flyers lead the NHL in regulation wins (16), goals per game (3.62) and goal differential (plus-32), and they're tied for the most wins (19) and points (39) with the Bruins.
Miss: They have the fewest road points (35) of any team currently in a Stanley Cup Playoff position in either conference.

6. Washington Capitals (41-20-8)

Total points: 149
Last week:No. 6
Hit:The Capitals lead the League in goals scored after the second period with 101, including an NHL-high 95 in the third period.
Miss: They are 6-8-3 since Feb. 2, a .441 points percentage that is tied for 26th in the League, the lowest among any team currently in a playoff position.

7. Vegas Golden Knights (39-24-8)

Total points:137
Last week: No. 7
Hit:The Golden Knights are 14-4-1 since Jan. 31, which has allowed them to jump into first place in the Pacific Division with a three-point lead on the Edmonton Oilers. They were in position to be the second wild card into the playoffs from the Western Conference on Jan. 30.
Miss: Vegas' penalty kill is ranked 26th in the NHL at 76.6 percent.

8. Pittsburgh Penguins (40-23-6)

Total points: 118
Last week:No. 8
Hit: The Penguins are the only team in the NHL to win at least 40 games in each of the past 13 full seasons (excluding the 48-game, lockout-shortened 2012-13 season).
Miss:They have the League's worst points percentage (.273) since Feb. 20, going 3-8-0 in that stretch. They've dropped from first in the Metropolitan Division with a one-point lead on the Capitals to third, four points out of first.

9. Edmonton Oilers (37-25-9)

Total points: 93
Last week: No. 9
Hit:The Oilers have the best special teams in the League, including the No. 1-ranked power play (29.5 percent) and the No. 2-ranked penalty kill (84.4 percent). Last season, they were ninth on the power play (21.2 percent) and 30th on the penalty kill (74.8 percent).
Miss: They have won only 17 of 34 home games (17-11-6), allowing 3.38 goals per game, which ranks 30th, ahead of only the Detroit Red Wings (3.43).

10. Dallas Stars (37-24-8)

Total points: 86
Last week: No. 10
Hit:The Stars are second in the NHL in goals against per game (2.52). They are also tied with the Capitals for the most third-period comeback wins with nine.
Miss:They are 26th in goals per game (2.58), including 30th in goals for in the first period (49).

11. Carolina Hurricanes (38-25-5)

Total points: 82
Last week:No. 11
Hit: Center Sebastian Aho has an NHL career-high 38 goals, including four shorthanded. The Hurricanes are tied for second in the NHL in shorthanded goals (10) with the Anaheim Ducks.
Miss:The Hurricanes are tied for 25th in 5-on-5 save percentage (.912).

12. Toronto Maple Leafs (36-25-9)

Total points:70
Last week:No. 12
Hit:The Maple Leafs are third in goals per game (3.39), sixth on the power play (23.1 percent) and third in face-off percentage (52.5).
Miss:They are in the bottom third of the League in goals against per game (3.17, tied for 26th), penalty kill (77.7 percent, 21st) and games when they have scored the first goal (31, tied for 25th).

13. Columbus Blue Jackets (33-22-15)

Total points: 39
Last week: No. 13
Hit:Goalies Elvis Merzlikins and Joonas Korpisalo have combined for 32 wins, including seven shutouts, and a .916 save percentage. The Blue Jackets are tied for third in goals against per game (2.61).
Miss:They have a League-high 419 man-games lost to injury.

14. Calgary Flames (36-27-7)

Total points:31
Last week: No. 14
Hit:The Flames lead the NHL with six shootout wins, a significant reason why they are third in the Pacific Division with 79 points, one more than the Vancouver Canucks.
Miss:They have allowed the first goal in 40 of their 70 games, better than only the Red Wings (41) and Ottawa Senators (44).

15. Nashville Predators (35-26-8)

Total points: 23
Last week: No. 15
Hit: Roman Josi is second among NHL defensemen in points with 65 (16 goals, 49 assists), trailing John Carlson of the Capitals (75), and first in shots on goal with 260 in 69 games.
Miss: Josi has 17 more points and 62 more shots on goal than anyone else on the Predators.

16. Winnipeg Jets (37-28-6)

Total points:15

Hit: Connor Hellebuyck's .922 save percentage is second in the NHL among goalies who have played 35 or more games despite the fact that he has faced the most shots in the NHL (1,796). He leads the League in saves (1,656).
Miss:The Jets are 29th in the NHL in goals scored in the first period (50). Only the Stars (49) and Red Wings (44) have scored fewer.
