Stars win 6th straight game to close regular season

DALLAS --The Dallas Stars maintained their lead atop the Central Division with a 1-0 win against the St. Louis Blues at American Airlines Center on Thursday.

The Stars remained one point ahead of the Colorado Avalanche, who defeated the Winnipeg Jets 4-2 on Thursday and will conclude their regular season at the Nashville Predators on Friday.
"You want to play in the NHL, but you want to win the Stanley Cup," said forward Wyatt Johnston, who scored the only goal. "That's in your dreams, winning the Stanley Cup. That's what I've dreamt about many, many times. It's really, really exciting just with how good of a team we have here, and going into the playoffs in my first year and having a great opportunity to win it."
Jake Oettinger made 25 saves for his fifth shutout for the Stars (47-21-14), who finished the regular season with six straight wins.
"It felt like a playoff game, especially in the third, and how they were coming at us with nothing left to lose, really, in their season and just playing proud," Dallas forward Tyler Seguin said. "You respect that. We haven't had one of these in a while, one of these real tight 1-0 games. It was great."

Jordan Binnington made 33 saves for the Blues (37-38-7), who lost five of their final seven games (2-4-1).
"We hung in there," St. Louis coach Craig Berube said. "[Binnington] was really good in the game for us. Made some big saves early on in the first, and in the third, too. Kept us in the game."
The Blues failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2017-18, the season before they won the Cup.
"It's tough. You work hard to play at this time of year, obviously," Binnington said. "It's frustrating. It just felt like it wasn't our time, it wasn't meant to be. Everybody here, we worked hard. It just didn't feel like it was going our way, and that happens. That's part of being a professional athlete and a competitor. It's how you handle it. You've got to just clear your mind, reset, refresh, recharge, and come back at it even stronger."
Johnston made it 1-0 at 3:45 of the third period. His initial shot from the high slot deflected to Evgenii Dadonov, whose attempt at an open net from the left circle hit off the far post and caromed back to Johnston, who scored into an his own open net.
"We talked between the second and third, that's going to be a playoff-type game," Dallas coach Peter DeBoer said. "You're facing a hot goalie, or you're not getting the calls from the officials, whatever the adversity you're facing, you've just got to stick with it, stick with it, don't get impatient. That's when you lose a game like that, you step outside of your comfort zone trying to push too hard. I thought we did a good job of just sticking with it."

STL@DAL: Johnston gives Stars lead in 3rd period

Said Blues forward Brayden Schenn: "[Dallas is] good. They've got a good goalie, they've got good [defense], they're big, they skate well, and they're deep. They've had a good season. They've got a good mix of old and young, and everyone pulls their weight together. That's what you need in this day and age to win."
NOTES: Johnston has 24 goals this season, tying James Neal (2008-09) for the most by a rookie Stars history. He is also tied with Matty Beniers of the Seattle Kraken for the most by a rookie in the NHL this season. … Dallas forward Mason Marchment played 14:11 in his return after missing 14 games with a lower-body injury.
