WSH@NJD: Ovi, teammates sound off after 700th goal

After scoring his 700th goal, Alex Ovechkin let out a scream so loud, fans in back in Washington D.C. might have been able to hear him.
Then they all took to social media to congratulate the man they call The Great 8.

Athletes inside and outside the NHL lauded the Washington Capitals captain after he became the eighth player to score 700 career goals against the New Jersey Devils on Saturday.

Ovechkin's teammates mobbed him seconds after he scored the milestone goal, his 42nd of the season at 4:50 of the third period. The crowd in New Jersey cheered to congratulate Ovechkin, as did the Devils Twitter account.

Ovechkin's wife Nastya shared her excitement for his accomplishment on Instagram. Teammate T.J. Oshie also shared a congratulatory tweet.

Marcel Dionne, a Hall of Fame forward who scored 731 NHL goals during his 18-season career, recorded a message to congratulate Ovechkin for joining 700-goal club.

Eddie Lack, who played 144 NHL games and coaches Arizona State University, congratulated Ovechkin while also reminding him that he couldn't have reached the milestone without him.

Brian Burke, an analyst for Sportsnet and former NHL executive, offered his congratulations.

Washington Nationals infielder Ryan Zimmerman recorded a celebratory message, and managing principal owner Mark Lerner released a statement.

Washington Redskins coach Ron Rivera, running back Adrian Peterson, defensive lineman Jonathan Allen and linebacker Ryan Kerrigan recorded congratulations.

Washington Wizards guard John Wall recorded a message too, and forward Davis Bertans also posted his excitement on Twitter.

NBCSN hockey commentator Kenny Albert shared an incredible nugget that tied Ovechkin's milestone goal with the United States team at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics team, which defeated the Soviet Union 40 years ago Saturday.
