Center Riley Sheahan signed a two-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday.
Financial terms were not released, but MLive.com reported Wednesday that Sheahan will receive an average annual value of $2.075 million.
Sheahan, 24, could have become a restricted free agent July 1. He had 14 goals and 11 assists in 81 regular-season games, and one point in five Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Selected by the Red Wings with the 21st pick of the 2010 NHL Draft, Sheahan has 36 goals and 49 assists in 204 regular-season games in five seasons, all with Detroit.
Defenseman Brian Lashoff signed a one-year contract with the Red Wings. He had a goal and 15 assists in 74 regular-season games with Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League this season, and two goals and an assist in nine Calder Cup Playoff games.
