PHILADELPHIA --The Coyotes scored two short-handed goals during the same penalty kill on Thursday night in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Flyers at Wells Fargo Center.
Derek Stepan and Michael Grabner both beat Philadelphia goalie Cal Pickard with breakaway shots 24 seconds apart in the second period while teammate Vinnie Hinostroza sat in the penalty box for tripping.

The Coyotes are just the second NHL team to score nine shorties in their first 14 games since 1933-34, the season that statistic became official. The St. Louis Blues also tallied nine in 14 games in 1975-76.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Brad Richardson also scored for Arizona, which led 4-2 after two periods.
"We went brain dead in the third," Richardson said. "We turned pucks over. It's pretty simple, just get the puck in deep and we would've won the game, but we made some stupid plays and they scored on them ... When you're up two goals you don't have to do anything fancy, you've just got to keep playing and run the clock out."

Head Coach Rick Tocchet liked how his team responded after falling behind 2-0 in the first period, but was left scratching his head after watching Shayne Gostisbehere score the decisive goal 1:01 into overtime.
"It's a learning lesson for this team," Tocchet said. "They didn't get the puck in deep on a couple of mismanagement plays (and) that cost us. This is a team that's really good 150 feet. We talked about a game plan and then we started to take over the game. We played 200 feet and then all of a sudden we reverted back to the old habits."

Tocchet: 'It's a Learning Lesson'

• Backup goalie Darcy Kuemper started in place of injured Antti Raanta and made 26 saves. Meanwhile, Brian Elliott stopped all 16 shots he faced in relief of Pickard, whom the Flyers yanked after Grabner's goal at 6:38 of the second period.
• The Coyotes played most of the game with only five defensemen. Alex Goligoski, who is nursing a lower-body injury, skated just two shifts in the first period before exiting.
"That's hard with five 'D,' to hold it together," Tocchet said. "Like I said, these guys are a pretty good forechecking team."
• By notching a goal and an assist, Ekman-Larsson reached the 300-point milestone of his NHL career. However, he turned the puck over late in the game and that giveaway led to Philadelphia's fourth goal, which Dale Weise scored on a breakaway with just 2:13 left.
"We have to do a better job when there's two minutes left to get the puck deep," Ekman-Larsson said. "That one is on me ... It's sour. It's a game that we should have been able to close out."

OEL: Mistakes Cost Us

Ekman-Larsson skated a game-high 27:18, took six shots on goal and delivered seven hits.
"'O' made a bad decision, and it happens, but he played a great game for us tonight," Tocchet said.
• The Coyotes lead the NHL in penalty killing at 91.1 percent and are the only NHL team since 1977-78 to be plus-5 on the penalty kill (nine short-handed goals, four power-play goals-against).
Clayton Keller assisted on Ekman-Larsson's goal to extend his point streak to six games. Grabner also has a six-game point streak.
• Stats that jump off the Event Summary: Jason Demers played a season-high 26:23, Stepan won eight of 13 face-offs, and Jordan Oesterle blocked four shots.
Christian Fischer skated 13:08, took four shots on goal and delivered two hits in his 100th NHL game.
