It was a quick turnaround for Montreal, having previously played the Maple Leafs in Toronto on Wednesday night.
Goaltender Jake Allen made his second straight start while Carey Price continues to recover from a lower-body injury. Price is expected to be sidelined until sometime next week.

It took just 18 seconds for the Jets to solve Allen, who failed to stop a snapshot from a streaking Josh Morrissey in the slot.
The Winnipeg defenseman was the recipient of a tape-to-tape backhand feed from left-winger Mathieu Perreault, and he wasted little time going top shelf on the Habs' starter.

Morrissey's third goal of the season was also assisted by right-winger Mason Appleton.
The early deficit didn't faze the Canadiens at all, though, and they responded almost immediately to tie things up 1-1.
Only 1:22 after Morrissey's tally, centreman Phillip Danault banged home a loose puck in front of goaltender Connor Hellebuyck for his fourth goal of the year.

Wingers Tomas Tatar and Jesperi Kotkaniemi both collected assists on the play.
Head coach Paul Maurice's squad answered right back when defenseman Neal Pionk made a wonderful saucer pass to right-winger Trevor Lewis, who was breaking to the net and escaped coverage from defenseman Victor Mete.
Lewis tipped the puck past Allen at the 8:03 mark of the stanza to give Winnipeg a 2-1 advantage.

Defenseman Derek Forbort also collected an assist on Lewis' second goal of the season.
Five minutes later, right-winger Nikolaj Ehlers put the Jets ahead 3-1 when he sped past defenseman Jeff Petry up the wall and beat Allen low with a perfectly placed snipe.
It was Ehlers' 16th goal of the season.

The tally was unassisted.
That's the way things stood after 20 minutes. Montreal led 18-9 in shots at the break.
There were no goals to report in the second period until left-winger Paul Byron capitalized on a bad bounce off the boards behind Hellebuyck with 4:46 left before the intermission.
Byron's fourth goal of the season made it 3-2, and the assists came courtesy of Petry and Kotkaniemi.

Kotkaniemi's fourth multi-point effort of the year was his first since March 10 in Vancouver.
That set up a big third period. The Canadiens were still outshooting the Jets by a 29-15 margin.
Right-winger Andrew Copp capped the scoring for Winnipeg in the final frame by potting an empty-netter with 38 seconds left in regulation.
Forwards Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele were credited with helpers.
Allen finished the game with 23 saves.
The Canadiens wrap up their busy week with a rematch against the Jets on Saturday night at the Bell Centre.
