Finland vs. Sweden
Finland got the upper hand on its Scandinavian rival on Day 1, when three Finns went in the top five for the first time in the history of the draft. Right wing Patrik Laine was chosen at No. 2 to the Winnipeg Jets, right wing Jesse Puljujarvi went to the Edmonton Oilers at No. 4 and defenseman Olli Juolevi landed with the Vancouver Canucks at No. 5.
Florida took center Henrik Borgstrom at No. 23 to make it four Finns in the first round. No Swedes were taken in Round 1.
But the Swedes caught up on Saturday, when 24 were selected in the final six rounds. The first was Rasmus Asplund, taken by the host Buffalo Sabres at No. 33. Finland had 11 players selected on Saturday.
Final count: Sweden 24, Finland 15.
What a Knight!
The London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League won the Memorial Cup last month and, this weekend, they were further rewarded as seven of their players were taken in the draft, including three in the first round.
The seven were: D Olli Juolevi, Vancouver Canucks (No. 5); LW Matthew Tkachuk, Calgary Flames (No. 6); LW Max Jones, Anaheim Ducks (No. 24); G Tyler Parsons, Calgary Flames (No. 54); RW Cliff Pu, Buffalo Sabres (No. 69); D Victor Mete, Montreal Canadiens (No. 100); D Nicolas Mattinen, Toronto Maple Leafs (No. 179).
London has had 11 players drafted in the past three years, including four first-round picks.
