NEW YORK/TORONTO --Today, the National Hockey League (NHL) announced it will purchase carbon offsets in an effort to shrink its environmental footprint. This marks the first time the League will offset carbon emissions caused by air travel for games during the Stanley Cup® Playoffs. As part of its commitment to sustainable business practices, and in celebration of Earth Day, the NHL® will purchase carbon offsets for all four rounds of the postseason, equaling approximately 2,000 metric-tons of CO2 emissions.

For the First Round of the postseason, which has the highest number of teams traveling, the NHL will offset more than 465 metric-tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to taking 99 cars off the road for one year\.
The League will purchase carbon offsets from Bonneville Environmental Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to green products and sustainable business solutions.
Last season, the NHL published its second Sustainability Report, which assesses the League's environmental impact and its commitment to ensure all levels of hockey - on frozen ponds, community rinks, or in-arena - thrive for future generations. The Report highlights results of various environmental efforts including: water restoration, landfill reduction, efficient electricity use, sustainable landscaping, and increased recycling.
Since its launch in 2010, NHL Green™ has been committed to promoting green business practices across the League as well as preserving the environment, including the frozen ponds that inspired and cultivated the game more than 100 years ago. For more information, visit
