Following a 142-day pause, the NHL dropped the puck with the Stanley Cup Qualifiers on Saturday, Aug. 1, followed by the start of the First Round of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs on Tuesday, Aug. 11. The Qualifiers delivered nine days of thrills, including 15 come-from-behind wins, three of four teams seeded 11 or 12 advancing to the First Round, seven games with tying or go-ahead goals scored in the final 90 seconds of regulation, and three hat tricks, among other impressive feats.
That was followed by a First Round which saw 24 of 43 games (56%) decided by a single goal, including eight games that required overtime. Teams rallied from behind to win 17 times, including seven multi-goal comebacks. The Stars eliminated the Calgary Flames in Game 6 by scoring seven unanswered goals to overcome an early 3-0 deficit; rookie Denis Gurianov carried the Stars' offense with four goals and five points, tying the NHL mark for most goals by a rookie in a postseason game. Series upsets saw each of the last two Stanley Cup champions (the St. Louis Blues in 2019 and the Washington Capitals in 2018) eliminated in the First Round. Meanwhile, the Lightning, which was upset by the Columbus Blue Jackets in a stunning First Round sweep in 2019, won the rematch in five games, including a five-overtime thriller in Game 1, the fourth-longest game in NHL history.
