12.1 Canadiens ATR podcast

Jeff Gorton's new role as executive vice president of hockey operations of the Montreal Canadiens and Jack Hughes' new contract with the New Jersey Devils were two of the big topics discussed on a new edition of the "NHL @TheRink" podcast.

Dave Stubbs, the Montreal-based columnist for NHL.com, joined co-hosts Dan Rosen and Shawn P. Roarke on Wednesday to talk about the big moves in the Canadiens' front office, with Gorton and a to-be-determined general manager coming in to lead the hockey operations department, replacing GM Marc Bergevin and assistant GM Trevor Timmins.
Stubbs brought up the already lukewarm reception Gorton, an American who doesn't speak French, has already gotten in Montreal's Francophone community. He talked about why it's important that whoever the Canadiens hire the GM is able to speak to the fan base in French, a prerequisite for the job according to owner Geoff Molson.
Rosen and Roarke each brought up reasons why they like Hughes' eight-year, $64 million contract he signed Tuesday, but both agreed it's a gamble by the Devils to pay the 20-year-old center this much money so soon when he has scored 20 goals in 120 games.
The Vegas Golden Knights as a Stanley Cup contender, Jake DeBrusk's future and the Boston Bruins forward's trade request, goalie Matt Murray's demotion from the Ottawa Senators to Belleville of the American Hockey League were also topics discussed. In addition, Rosen and Roarke debated if the Philadelphia Flyers should trade captain Claude Giroux.
