NSH@SJS: Thornton nets 400th goal to put Sharks ahead

Joe Thornton joined an elite group when he scored his 400th NHL goal Tuesday in the San Jose Sharks' 5-4 win against the Nashville Predators at SAP Center.

The 39-year-old center became the 11th player in NHL history to have 400 goals and 1,000 assists. Of the first 10, forward Jaromir Jagr (who's not yet eligible) is the only one not in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The others are centers Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Ron Francis, Marcel Dionne, Steve Yzerman, Mario Lemieux and Joe Sakic, right wing Gordie Howe and defenseman Ray Bourque.
Teammate Erik Karlsson reached a milestone of his own. His assist on center Joe Pavelski's first-period goal was the 400th of his NHL career. It came in Karlsson's 646th NHL game; he's the 13th-fastest defenseman and fifth-fastest player born in Sweden to reach that mark.

Barzal reaches milestone with Islanders

Center Mathew Barzal had two assists in the New York Islanders' 5-2 victory against the Vancouver Canucks, giving him 101 points (24 goals, 77 assists) in his first 101 NHL games. It was his 25th multipoint game in the NHL, and he required the sixth-fewest games among active NHL players to reach 100 points.
The only Islanders players to reach 100 points in fewer games than Barzal are Hockey Hall of Famers Mike Bossy (57 goals, 43 assists in 79 games) and Bryan Trottier (34 goals, 66 assists in 93 games)
The five active NHL players who had more multipoint games through their first 101 career games than Barzal are Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby (41), Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin (39), Penguins center Evgeni Malkin (30), Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid (30) and Columbus Blue Jackets forward Artemi Panarin (27).

Luongo continues hot start for Panthers

Goalie Roberto Luongo made 30 saves for the Florida Panthers in their 2-1 win at the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday, giving him four wins in his first four decisions for the first time in his 19-season NHL career.
Luongo is the fourth goaltender in NHL history age 39 or older to start 4-0-0. Hall of Famers George Hainsworth and Tony Esposito also did so at age 39, and Dominik Hasek did it at age 40. The victory was Luongo's 475th in the NHL; he is nine behind Ed Belfour for third place on the League's all-time list.
Luongo got help from forwards Mike Hoffman and Evgenii Dadonov, who each continues his point streak. Hoffman's first-period assist extended his streak to an NHL career-best 13 games, matching the Panthers record set by Pavel Bure in 1999-2000. Dadonov scored the game-winning goal, extending his point streak to 12 games. He and Hoffman are the first set of teammates to have simultaneous point streaks of at least 12 games since Crosby and Malkin did it with the Penguins in 2007-08.

Oilers, Red Wings join scoring parade

The Edmonton Oilers (6-2 win against the Montreal Canadiens) and Detroit Red Wings (6-1 win against the Arizona Coyotes) marked the 39th and 40th instances of a team scoring at least six goals in a game this season. During the past 20 years, the only seasons with more such instances through the first 272 games are 2017-18 (43), 2006-07 (45) and 2005-06 (49).
McDavid, the two-time defending NHL scoring champion, had three assists and moved into a tie with Colorado Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen for the League scoring lead; each has 26 points. It was McDavid's NHL-best 31st game with at least three points since he entered the NHL in 2015-16; Malkin is next with 28.
Rookie defenseman Dennis Cholowski and rookie center Michael Rasmussen each scored a goal in Detroit's fourth straight victory. It marked the first time the Red Wings had two players age 20 or younger score in the same game since defenseman Jeff Sharples and forward Joe Murphy on Jan. 6, 1988.
