"Jake has been progressing well in his recovery from his previous injury, but we decided that this was a good opportunity to take care of a problem that he has been dealing with for a while," Sabres general manager Jason Botterill said. "Jake will have time to fully recover before the beginning of the 2018-19 season."
McCabe left in the second period of a 4-3 overtime loss to the Anaheim Ducks at KeyBank Center on Feb. 6. He has 12 points (three goals, nine assists) and averages 19:30 of ice time in 53 games this season.
The Sabres (17-32-11) are without center and leading scorer Jack Eichel, who sustained a high ankle sprain Feb. 10. They play the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday (7:30 p.m. ET; FS-D, MSG-B, NHL.TV).
Buffalo is last in the Eastern Conference, 19 points out of a Stanley Cup Playoff position.
