Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jared Coreau, recalled from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League on Wednesday after Jimmy Howard was placed on injured reserve, will make his second NHL start on Friday. Howard will miss 4-6 weeks with a sprained right knee. Coreau allowed four goals on 36 shots in a 5-3 loss against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 3 in a game the Red Wings led 3-1 after two periods. "I think we've got three very, very good goalies in our organization," coach Jeff Blashill said Friday. "We decided to give Jared a shot here tonight. We're going to need elite goaltending - I've said that from the onset - and I think he can give us elite goaltending tonight." Coreau is 11-6-0 with a 2.18 goals-against average and.924 save percentage in 17 games with Grand Rapids. "If you watch tonight, I'll be more calm," Coreau said. "Going down to Grand Rapids after I played that game, I felt like I had more time down there and really got to work on my game. The biggest thing is just closing out the game. If we're up 3-1, it's going to be a better third and that's just something you've got to do as an elite goalie at this level. It's something I've got to work towards." Detroit is 1-4-1 in its past six games, including a 4-1 loss against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday.
