Dec. 5 - Rufino Ranon 2568x1444

A good hockey coach isn't someone who just tells players what drills to run in practice and barks orders from behind the bench during a game. Though practice drills and direction during a game are important, there is much more to coaching. Successful coaches need to be fully invested in their team and truly care about each of the players on their roster.
Rufino Ranon is Shift Manager for the Health Sciences Centre Facility Management team. While perhaps not formally a "coach", he exhibits all the characteristics of a good one. His investment in the team of 96 housekeepers he is responsible for is obvious, and he is quick to acknowledge their hard work. Rufino never hesitates to share stories of how the housekeeping staff work around the clock to maintain all areas of the Health Sciences Centre, keeping wards in a condition that is safe for patients and healthcare workers.

You'd also be hard pressed to find someone with more compassion than Rufino. His relentless efforts have ensured his staff are able to remain safe in their work throughout the pandemic and his respect for each member of his team is clear. The housekeeping team, Rufino reminds us, is important not just to the facility they work in, but to the entire staff and every single patient they care for.
Rufino even drew parallels between his housekeeping team and the Winnipeg Jets, noting that neither team surrenders in a difficult situation, instead taking those as opportunities to improve. Most importantly, he notes, is that teamwork is vital for both teams' success, with everyone on the team playing a crucial role.
"The ongoing pandemic has been a real challenge to all of us in the community, and especially to us who are part of the healthcare system. Knowing that patient care and the entire hospital operation depend on us to do our part so that the hospital can continue providing care has kept us motivated to perform our work well. I am very proud of my job and that I'm able to contribute to the overall health of the community." - Rufino Ranon, Shift Manager, Health Sciences Centre Facility Management
