Anders Lee scored both of the Islanders' two goals, while Semyon Varlamov made his season debut and made 34 saves on 37 shots.
Brandon Duhaime scored twice while Ryan Hartman also scored in regulation and Jonas Brodin and Matt Dumba added empty-net tallies.
Kaapo Kahkonen made 19 saves on 21 shots for the Wild.

First Period:
19:41 - NYI 1, MIN 0 - With just 19 seconds on the clock, Anders Lee provided the Islanders with a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Lee collected a loose puck off of Zdeno Chara's initial point shot. Mathew Barzal also picked up an assist on the goal.
Second Period:
9:59 - MIN 1, NYI 1 - Brandon Duhaime wrapped around the net and fired a shot through traffic past Semyon Varlamov to give Minnesota its first goal of the game. Nick Bjugstad earned an assist.
12:04 - NYI 2, MIN 1 - Anders Lee restored the lead to the Islanders as he buried his second goal of the game off an odd-man rush feed from Mathew Barzal.
Third Period:
7:17 - MIN 2, NYI 2 -Ryan Hartman lofted the puck short side over Semyon Varlamov's glove to tie the score 2-2 for Minnesota. Dmitry Kulikov and Nico Sturm tallied assists on the goal.
9:18 - MIN 3, NYI 2 - Brandon Duhaime gave the Wild their first lead of the game. Ryan Hartman and Matt Dumba dished out the helpers on the go-ahead goal.
18:13 - MIN 4, NYI 2, ENG - Jonas Brodin doubled Minnesota's lead 4-2 as he scored on an empty net after the Islanders pulled Semyon Varlamov in exchange for an extra skater.
19:11 - MIN 5, NYI 2, ENG -Matt Dumba extended Minnesota's lead 5-2 as he scored on the empty Islanders' net.
