HISTORIC CAPTAINS
Wednesday marks a new chapter in Golden Knights history with Stone as team captain. Teams have selected individuals to be their leaders dating back to the early days of the sport. The player who wears the "C" is looked to for leadership and, when a team reaches the top of the mountain, is the first to touch the Stanley Cup. Let's look at some of the great leaders in NHL history.
Mark Messier - Not the first time we've talked about Mark Messier in the Diaries. Messier wasn't Wayne Gretzky's second fiddle in Edmonton in the 1980's. He was more like the drummer to Gretzky's guitarist in a rock band. He was the glue. Messier captained the Oilers to the Stanley Cup in 1990 without Gretzky and led the New York Rangers to their first championship in 54 years in 1994. Not to mention the other four Cups he won with Edmonton.
Sidney Crosby - Sidney Crosby's tenure as captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins began after his second season in the NHL and the "C" has remained on his sweater ever since. He's led the Penguins to the Stanley Cup Final four times including three victories in 2009, 2016 and 2017. Crosby is the longest tenured current captain in the NHL.
Steve Yzerman - Stevie Y. He was the leader of the Red Wings on and off the ice during his career. Yzerman led Detroit to the Stanley Cup Final four times with three titles. Like Crosby, he was the captain for back-to-back championships (1997, 1998). Now the general manager of the Red Wings, Yzerman had 1,755 points (692G, 1,063A) in his career
Jean Beliveau - As one of the most legendary captains in NHL history, Beliveau helped the Montreal Canadiens to 10 Stanley Cups in his career. He won the Cup five times while wearing the "C" for the bleu, blanc et rouge.
Denis Potvin - The New York Islanders were the last team to win four consecutive Stanley Cups and Denis Potvin was steering the ship for all four of those titles. He wore the "C" on Long Island from 1979-1987.

An honorable mention here for Ryan Callahan. While he never won the Stanley Cup, the recently retired forward was a warrior for the New York Rangers while he was their captain as Dan points out in his tweet.
