There weren't many shots, and far fewer real offensive chances.
But there were lots of hits, plenty of physicality, and tons of great checking by the Flames as they beat the Stars 1-0 in Game 1 on Tuesday night in front of a roaring capacity C of Red at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Elias Lindholm had the lone tally on a first-period powerplay, while Jacob Markstrom recorded his 10th shutout of the season.
Markstrom is only the second goaltender to record a shutout in the opening game of the playoffs in franchise history. The other was Mike Smith in 2019. Markstrom's only the seventh Flames goaltender to record a shutout in a playoff game in franchise history.
Matthew Tkachuk put on a clinic late in Tuesday's tilt to help preserve the victory.
Flames.com*'s Ryan Dittrick broke down the play and wrote about the left-winger's solid performance in the series opener.
"That's a statement," teammate Blake Coleman said. "He's the heartbeat right now. He's in every scrum, he's setting up plays, he's scoring goals, he's a tough guy to play against and for him this is obviously a big stage.
"He had a great season and I expect we haven't seen the best of Matthew Tkachuk yet."

MAN, HE'S GAUD: Johnny Gaudreau recorded his first point of the playoffs and his 20th career postseason tally with his assist on Elias Lindholm's lone goal on Tuesday. Gaudreau is now tied for the third-most single-season points (116), regular season and playoffs, in Flames franchise history with Kent Nilsson (1982-83).
THE HIT PARADE: Blake Coleman (6) and Dillon Dube (5) combined for 11 hits in game one to lead the Flames in that category on Tuesday. Coleman and Dube's combined 11 hits were more than half than the total amount the Stars recorded (20) in the game. Milan Lucic, who led the Flames in hits during the regular season with 209, had the third most hits in the opening game with four.
PLAYOFF DEBUT: Oliver Kylington made his Stanley Cup playoffs debut last night while logging 13:43 of ice-time and a shot on goal. Kylington is coming off a career season that saw him post highs in goals (9), assists (22), and points (31), while playing a career-high 73 games for the Flames.
