Flames prospect Mathias Emilio Pettersen has been named the NCHC's Rookie Of The Month for October.
The Denver University freshman has helped lead the Pioneers to a 3-0-1 start with his team-high eight points through those four skates. During that stretch, he put 12 shots on net and had a plus-7 rating. He leads all NCHC rookies in scoring and is tied for the NCAA lead among first-year skaters. Pettersen's 2.00 points-per-game average also leads all NCAA rookies with more than a single game played.
Pettersen's collegiate career started off with a three-point effort against Air Force on Oct. 12. He followed that up with an assist in Denver's game vs. Alabama-Huntsville on Oct. 13.
In Denver's two-game set against Alaska the following weekend, Pettersen posted two points in each skate. On Oct. 19, he scored a goal, picked up an assist and was named the game's First Star in a 4-1 win. The next time, he had two assists in a 3-3 tie.
The Flames drafted the Norwegian forward in the sixth round, 167th overall, in the 2018 NHL Draft. Prior to his collegiate career, he played in the USHL, where he posted 24 goals and 73 points in 117 regular-season games.
