KANATA, Ont. — Another road game, another contest that could have gone either way.

But in the end, the host Senators came away with the extra point, nipping the Flames 4-3 in a shootout thanks to two skills competition tallies, and a late equalizer that forced extra time.

Yegor Sharangovich, Matt Coronato and Nazem Kadri all scored for Calgary - all go-ahead markers - while Devin Cooley turned aside 35 shots in his second start of the campaign.

Sharangovich got things started with a signature snapshot 5:51 into the first period. Joel Farabee zipped a pass across the Senators zone onto the tape of the Belarusian forward, who settled, loaded, and fired the puck into the top corner past Ottawa netminder Linus Ullmark.

The goal marked Sharangovich's 200th career NHL point - but more importantly in the present tense - gave the Flames a 1-0 lead for the fifth time in the past half-dozen games.

Ottawa tied the game at 1-1 with a short-handed marker from Lars Eller, but the Flames took advantage of a man-advantage opportunity once again later in the opening frame.

Morgan Frost found Coronato in the slot for a shooting opportunity, and Coronato fired the puck on goal. Ullmark made the initial stop, but Coronato found the loose rebound amid a tangle of legs, back-handing home his third goal of the season.

At the other end, Cooley was rock-solid, stoning Tim Stutzle inside the opening two minutes of the game, then flashing the leather on a Dylan Cozens one-timer early in period two that appeared destined for the top corner.

Artem Zub got the home side back on level terms with a seeing-eye point shot 2:36 into the third, but the Flames dug in, and used a neutral zone turnover to find a third go-ahead marker.

Jonathan Huberdeau stripped his man of the disc at centre ice, then completed a give-and-go with Kadri that gave the centreman an inch of space in the high slot. From there, Kadri took advantage, lacing a puck into the top corner for his third goal in four games.

But again, the Senators tied it, on a fluky point shot from Jake Sanderson that caromed past Cooley with just under three minutes left on the clock.

That tally forced overtime, and it was in overtime that Cooley saved some of his best work. A lunging blocker save on Cozens, a stretching pad stop on Stutzle all part of a seven-save effort in a five-minute session that included an Ottawa powerplay.

Drake Batherson and Stutzle each scored in the shootout, while Ullmark stopped Morgan Frost after Justin Kirkland struck iron on the Flames' first attempt.

Mikael Backlund led the Flames with six shots on goal, while Ryan Lomberg and Brayden Pachal each paced the visitors with three hits.
