The Ducks enter the Draft Lottery having been ranked No. 2 by the Hockey News in its annual Future Watch Issue released in March 2023. Anaheim earned an A-plus grade in a poll of top 21-and-under NHLers and prospects behind only the New Jersey Devils (ranked by a panel of NHL scouts). Over the last three seasons, Anaheim is the only club to place in the top three of the rankings each season and the only club in the top two spots the last two (second in 2023, first in 2022 and third in 2021).

On April 14, the NHL announced the odds for clubs participating in the 2023 NHL Draft Lottery, which will determine the order of selection for the first 16 picks in the first round of the 2023 NHL Draft. Participants are all teams that did not qualify for the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs (or the teams that have acquired the first-round drafting positions of those non-playoff teams).

Anaheim enters Monday's event with a 25.5 percent chance of receiving the top selection in the draft. The Ducks can win the first overall selection and draft No. 1 overall for the first time in franchise history, and their highest selection since a No. 2 overall pick in the 2005 NHL Draft. Anaheim has selected in the top three on three prior occasions, including No. 3 in 2021 (Mason McTavish), No. 2 in 2005 (Bobby Ryan) and another No. 2 pick in 1994 (Oleg Tverdovsky).

The NHL announced changes to the Draft Lottery format March 23, 2021. Among the changes instituted in 2022 is a limit on the total number of selections (10) a team participating in the Draft Lottery can "move up" in the event it wins one of the Lottery Draws. Only the top 11 seeds will be eligible to receive the first overall selection in the 2023 NHL Draft. The odds for the remaining teams will increase on a proportionate basis for the 2nd Lottery Draw, based on which team wins the 1st Lottery Draw.

The 14 teams not selected in the 2023 NHL Draft Lottery will be assigned the remaining 2023 NHL Draft selections (among 1 through 16 in the first round), in inverse order of regular-season points.

Potential Anaheim Outcomes:
First Overall (25.5% chance)
Second Overall (18.8% chance)
Third Overall (55.7% chance)
