PRE-GAME REPORT

NEWARK, NJ - Following a shootout loss to the NHL's best regular season team last season, the Devils are prepared for a big test on Saturday against the same opponent.
"I believe we're going to get a real good feel, two games in (plus) an afternoon game. So, you know, it's managing minutes. The next day will be a day off. I don't know if we're going to really feel that the real serious grind until we start getting into that every other day, every other day playing, but we're going to get close to it," noted Devils head coach Lindy Ruff.
"It's going to give us a little test. Wwe'll see how some players bounce back. The compete in last night's game was a level above where some of our games in camp were."
Ruff felt like the team was a bit hesitant to start in their first game in 10 months but eased their way into the contest.
"We had nerves, we didn't handle a puck very well. We didn't make very good decisions with the puck early on. They were a step faster. They got to places a little quicker than we did," Ruff begain. "A lot of the 50-50 battles went their way. But I thought after that it was a hard compete game that went both ways.
"Both teams generated some, some good opportunities. And I thought the longer it went, the better we seemed to be getting. Our puck movement was good."
The compete was there for Ruff but he was also hoping for some better systems work, which he acknowledged will come with time.
"I'd like to see our D just a little bit more active where they can get involved in the offensive zone to create some of that extra zone time."
Shots on goal in the third period were 9-7 Devils and 4-2 in overtime after being outshot 26-11 in the first 40 minutes.
"Overall, I thought once we got by that first period, we settled into a game," Ruff said. "I look at a lot of young players with very little experience and I thought they handled the game well, When you talk about the grind of a regular season, and this is a short end season. So the games are even closer together.

SHORT MEMORIES
With two games in three days against the Boston Bruins, the Devils have their work set out for them. The Bruins were the best team in the League at the conclusion of the 2019-20 season and fell in the playoffs to the eventual Stanley Cup Champions. Although the visitors took the first game on Thursday night, the Devils fight in the third and overtime periods showed the team they could keep up with a veteran opponent.
"I think when we look back at the game, we got better as the game went on which is a positive. And we got some more confidence," said Travis Zajac. "As a young team, we can compete with one of the better veteran teams in this league and it gives us confidence going into tomorrow's game."
The Devils will look to have a much quicker start in Saturday's game after they struggled in their first period against the Bruins on Thursday night.
"We just can't dip our toe in the water, we got to go after them and get pucks behind them," said Zajac. "With our speed we can cause problems and make their defense turn and get over pucks and just tty and get three guys on the forecheck, our defense up ice, and I think if we do a better job of that [in] tomorrow's start we'll dictate some more of the play."
"I think we had nerves, we didn't handle the puck very well, we didn't make very good decisions with the puck early on," said Devils Head Coach Lindy Ruff. "I thought after that it was a hard compete game that went both ways. Both teams generated some good opportunities. And I thought the longer it went, the better we seem to be getting."
Bruins forward Brad Marchand had two goals and a primary assist on the other Boston goal, and defenseman Damon Severson said that their opponent's top line is one they need to focus in on."
"[The Bruins] have a very potent top line and they're even missing one of their best players," said Severson. "They have a good power play, they're good off the rush, they're good in the offensive zone. They've played together for so long now, so they're a tough team to defend."
"We had a couple tough breaks and Kulikov broke his stick on the [first Marchand goal] and wasn't able to cover the back door, and then you know the shootout is the shootout, that's just luck of the draw."
When it comes to how the team prepared for Saturday's game in their practice Friday, Ruff and his coaching staff focused on the mentality and 'keeping it simple' game plan.
"We met this morning, we went through some situations on the ice. We talked about the mentality we want to have going into the game. We want to keep tomorrow really short, obviously just playing them [Thursday] I think they're going to have a good feel for us, we've got a good feel for them."
"We had a couple breakdowns and gave them some great opportunities, we'd like to clean up."

PREVIEW

DEVILS (0-0-1) vs. BRUINS (1-0-0)
TV: 1:00 p.m. ET; Televised on MSG+
Head-to-Head:

On Thursday, the Devils dropped a 3-2 decision in a shootout which included Ty Smith scoring his first career NHL goal in his first game. Miles Wood had the other Devils goal.

NJD Recap: Devils earn point in shootout loss

The Devils fell to the Bruins in the 2019-20 season series, posting a 1-2-0 record, being outscored 10-4 in three games played.
The two teams meet again on Saturday at 1:00 PM at Prudential Center. New Jersey will head up to Boston for a two-game road series, Feb. 15 and Feb. 18 at TD Garden.
Devils team scope:
In the Devils season opener against Boston on Thursday, P.K. Subban logged a ton of minutes: 30:18, in fact. Jack Hughes had a pair of assists while Ty Smith and Miles Wood each scored a goal in the 3-2 shootout setback.
Mackenzie Blackwood was stellar in the season's first game
Boston Bruins team scope:
Brad Marchand led the Bruins in scoring in the 2019-20 season series, recording two goals and four assists for six points in three games played and picked up where he left off on Thursday, scoring a goal and adding the shootout winner. Nick Ritchie had the other Bruins goal.
By the Numbers:
Every team in the NHL had played at least one game by Friday with the exception of Ottawa, Florida and Dallas. 15 teams have netted a victory with five others, including the Devils, holding an overtime or shootout loss. ... Ty Smith's goal in his debut on Thursday was only the second time a Devils defenseman scored a goal in his NHL debut. The previous time was Josef Boumedienne on October 6, 2001. Although for Bouwmedienne, that was the only game he'd ever play as a Devil as he was traded to Tampa Bay just over a month later.
Injury Updates:
Devils -Nico Hischier (ankle) is out.
Bruins - David Pastrnak (hip) is out.
