PRE-GAME REPORT

NEWARK, NJ - After Friday night's loss to Carolina, the Devils are refocusing on their game plan. For veteran Travis Zajac, that means playing for each other and buying in to the same plan.
"Everyone being on the same page," said Zajac. "When we're not playing well, that's our whole M.O. We go on our own page, we get a little selfish, good teams don't do that. We have to find a way to fix that and play for each other today."
After rewatching the game against Carolina, Devils Interim Head Coach Alain Nasreddine addressed his concerns with the team before the Devils morning skate.
"It wasn't from a lack of effort, the effort was there. It just felt we weren't smart," said Nasreddine. "And all over the ice, whether it was puck decisions, structure, attention to detail, so that's what we addressed this morning. Talked about our defensive game again. There's breakdowns that we're giving up that are giving teams easy offense where it's just a matter of playing to our structure."
Father's Trip
The Devils are hosting their dads this weekend for this year's Father's Trip. The dads will attend tonight's game against Columbus before traveling with the team to St. Louis on Monday. This year's Father's Trip will wrap up with the Devils game versus the Blues on Tuesday.
"It's special for them to come out, see a game, be on the road and see what we go through on a day-to-day basis," said Zajac. "It's special for us just all the sacrifices they made for us growing up, bringing us to the rink, driving us to the rink, early mornings, you name it. So it's good to have them around."
"It's a very unique experience," said Kyle Palmieri about having the team's Father's Trip. "It's so special to have people that are played such significant roles in our lives, and it's always cool to give back. I know they have a great time spending time with the other dads."
"I went through it with my dad as a player and a coach. So I know it's a great experience," said Nasreddine on his experience with Father's Trips in the NHL.
"Your parents put in so much effort when you're growing up, taking you to arenas," said Nasreddine. "So it's great that they get to spend some time with their sons."
Hischier Returns to the Lineup
Nico Hischier will return to the lineup tonight against Columbus after missing the last two weeks. Hischier cut his knee during the Devils game against Dallas on February 1st. He returned to the ice earlier this week but Sunday's morning skate was his first time participating in line rushes.
"It's always more exciting to play then watch the game, so really pumped about that to be back in the lineup," said Hischier. "You want to be down there, help the team. I want to play hockey, it's exciting I'm able to do it again."
"He's an important player for our team, you know he's a huge miss when he's not around," said Nasreddine. "Top line center, plays in all situations, so it's good to have him back. He'll be fresh and ready to go."
Hischier will return to center the top line with Jesper Bratt and Kyle Palmieri. Jack Hughes, who filled in for Hischier since the start of February, will return to the third line with Pavel Zacha and Wayne Simmonds.
Merkley Out Against Columbus
Although he had a strong game against Carolina, the Devils will sit Nick Merkley tonight. He played on the fourth line against the Hurricanes on Friday.
"It's tough because he did have a really good game. With Nico coming back it's a numbers game, not everyone can play. But we were happy with his performance," said Nasreddine.
Although Merkley won't play against Columbus, his time with the main club isn't over.
"This was a situation where we called him up on an emergency basis, and he's still around," said Nasreddine. "He'll get back in, he'll get another look because he deserves it. But to go back to his game, he had a strong game."
Tonight's expected lineup is below:
Bratt - Hischier - Palmieri
Coleman - Zajac - Gusev
Zacha - Hughes- Simmonds
Wood - Rooney - Anderson
Greene - Subban
Butcher - Severson
Mueller - Carrick
Blackwood
Domingue
