Domingue made an outstanding glove save off a blast from Alex Pietrangelo midway through the first. One of many strong saves he made throughout the night.
"If you look at Louis' game, it was a really strong game from Louis," said Nico Hischier after the game. "He kept us in the game a long time. As a team you want to give him something back. We didn't do that."
Coach Nasreddine added that Domingue gave the a team a chance to win, only down 1-0 after two periods, but they couldn't win puck battles all night.
"We couldn't generate anything. This game comes down to 50/50 puck battles. They won way more than us," Nasreddine said. "They're Stanley Cup champs for a reason. You have to give them credit. For us it was too much at the end of the stick."
With 73 seconds to go in the opening frame, a too many men on the ice penalty on New Jersey gave the Blues the first power play of the game.
After one, shots on goal were 13-6 for the Blues.
After the Devils killed off the penalty 47 seconds into the period, Nick Merkley got called for high sticking to send the Blues back on the man advantage.
Domingue made another big glove grab in close range a minute into the man advantage to keep the game scoreless.
Blues finally got on the board near the game's midway point. Ivan Barbashev picked up the puck in front of the crease after the puck ricocheted off the crease of Damon Severson. He quickly rifled the puck past Domingue.
Shots on goal in the second period were 11-5 for the Blues; 24-11 St. Louis overall through 40 minutes.
Domingue made a nice stop after a giveaway to Jaden Schwartz in front nearly resulted in the second Blues goal of the night in the opening minutes of the third. Domingue slid across to make another big stop on Pietrangelo off the rush five minutes in but then was finally solved a minute after that.

NJD Recap: Domingue makes 36 saves in loss to Blues

Barbashev netted his second of the game, quickly releasing a feed from the hashmarks past Domingue to double the Blues lead.
"After the start, that first 10 (minutes), I don't know whether we just got worn down or what it was but we were missing a lot," noted Palmieri. "It's just one of those things that they played better than us and that's the reason we spent most of the game in our own zone."
Thomas clipped Merkley with a high stick 18 seconds after the goal. Merkley had to be helped off the ice and into the dressing room. Thomas received four minutes as a result.
Devils had a lot of zone time but couldn't convert on the man advantage. Pavel Zacha had the best chance with an open net but his backhand attempt went off the iron.
"We hit the post on that first minor. You score there and it's a different game," Nasreddine said of the team's four-minute power play. "For us, all game long we had opportunities to shoot but for some reason wanted to be too cute. I didn't feel we had that shooting mentality."
Nasreddine added that Merkley will be fine after the injury though he didn't return the rest of the night. Will Butcher also left the game early in the first.
"(Butcher's injury) isn't a serious one," said Nasreddine, adding he needs to confer with the trainers tomorrow to get a more clear update on his status.
With five minutes to play, the Blues added to their total when Schwartz quickly snapped a shot from the bottom of the right circle top corner on Domingue.
