PRE-GAME STORY
The Devils held their final morning skate of the 2021-22 season in Raleigh, North Carolina this morning in the first game of a back-to-back to close out the season. After a day off on Wednesday, the club held a full morning skate and welcome Alexander Holtz back into the fold.
Battling injury this year, tonight will be the first time this season defenseman Dougie Hamilton will suit up against his former team in Carolina.
Holtz Goes In
Alexander Holtz will play his eighth NHL game tonight, arriving to Carolina from the Utica Comets on Wednesday. Holtz is still in search of his first NHL goal, and at times looked out of place in his first quick stint at the NHL level. It was a good test for him, and helped shaped how he approached his time in Utica and as well receiving this next opportunity with the NHL club.
"I need to do everything fast, the game is faster up here. Everything a little bit quicker."
He'll play with Jesper Boqvist and Jesper Bratt to make up an all-Swedish line, something he appeared very excited for. When asked what type of chemistry he hopes to have with his linemates and what he wants to get out of playing with them, Holtz replied:
"Some nice passes would be nice!"
Lindy Ruff, along with their complimentary playing styles, also added their ability to communicate with one another in their native language will be an asset for Holtz tonight. Ruff also mentioned that the 20-year-old will see power-play time against the Hurricanes.
It has been a while since Holtz has been up with the NHL club, marinating his game at the American Hockey League level. Holtz used it as an opportunity to grow his game in a way that will hopefully translate to NHL success.
"It's grown a lot," Holtz said of his all-around game. "I'm a more compact player like I was before. I had a full year down there, I think really helped me. It helped me grow my game in other aspects, not just scoring but defensively and other aspects as well. So, yeah. I think I've grown a lot."
Leading the Utica Comets in scoring with 26 goals, Holtz expects the exact same thing from himself at the NHL level now. To score.
"I want to bring the scoring touch as well, I've been scoring down there in the AHL. I want to continue with that at the higher level as well."
Battling the Bug
As has been the case the past few days, the Devils continue to battle a flu bug that has made its way around the locker room. Once again Nico Hischier and Tomas Tatar will sit out, still not healthy enough to return. While PK Subban also remains out for the same reason.
Won't Play But Feeling Good
Scheduled to play on Friday in the season finale at home, Mackenzie Blackwood won't play tonight after returning from a long injury in Ottawa earlier this week. The game was a good test as he gets ready for the off-season and gauging the work he needs to do this summer. After playing and getting into that groove, the next test would be the recovery and how Blackwood was feeling after the game. Lindy Ruff offered some good news on that front.
"He came out of that good," Lindy Ruff said after the morning skate. "Physically he is fine, which is good news for us."
Taking a Load Off
With the Metropolitan Divison locked up, the Carolina Hurricanes will rest some of their top players tonight as they prepare for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Captain Jordan Staal is expected to sit out, as is defenseman Jaccob Slavin, two players who consume a lot of minutes for the Hurricanes. Thirty-goal-scorer Andrei Svechnikov is also expected to be listed as a healthy scratch.
Antti Raanta will start in net for the Hurricanes, returning to their lineup after "tweaking something" on Sunday against the Islanders. Raanta did not finish the game but says he is 100 percent ready for tonight's matchup with New Jersey.
PREVIEW
DEVILS (27-44-9) at HURRICANES (53-20-8)
TV:7:00 PM ET on MSG+
Radio: Listen on Devils Hockey Network
Head-to-Head:
This will be the final road game of the Devils season, with just two games remaining on their calendar. For the second time in six days, these two clubs will meet, Carolina having beat the Devils last Sunday in a 3-2 overtime final. Since then, the Canes have locked up the Metropolitan Division title with their 113th and 114th point of the year. The Devils will look to split the four-game season series with the Hurricanes who have defeated the Devils in their last two of three meetings.
Devils Team Scope:
The Devils are coming off a 5-4 overtime loss to the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night, a game where goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood returned to the net for the first time since Jan. 19. Blackwood was returning from extensively rehabbing his heel and felt that against the Senators was the best his heel has felt this season.
With a flu bug making it's way around the Devils locker room, several veteran players were withheld from the lineup against the Senators. Nico Hischier, Tomas Tatar and P.K. Subban all sat out, leaving room for younger players to step in and play a bigger role. Forward Nolan Foote was the first to take advantage of the added minutes, recording his first career two-goal game, while defenseman Reilly Walsh made his NHL debut on the blueline, assisting on Foote's first goal.
Another youngster has joined the Devils in Carolina. Alexander Holtz was recalled on Wednesday and will be available to play in the final two games of the season.
Hurricanes Team Scope:
Just two nights ago the Hurricanes clinched the Metropolitan Divison title with a win over the New York Rangers. It is the second consecutive season Carolina has earned the top spot in the Metro, securing home-ice advantage at least through the first two rounds of the playoffs.
The Hurricanes wrap up their regular season on Wednesday night.
By the Numbers:
Alexander Holtz is the Utica Comets leader in goals with 26 this season, while his 51 points in 52 games rank third on the Comets squad, behind Chase DeLeo and Fabian Zetterlund who have played 53 and 58 games respectively this season.
Hurricanes goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov made his NHL debut last weekend against the Devils, since then he has played three games in four nights, with wins in all but one.
