A turnover in the third period with less than nine minutes to play was the difference maker at Prudential Center tonight. After the Devils had fired 41 shots on netminder Carter Hart, it was the Flyers who took advantage of a Damon Severson turnover at the blue line to break away and beat Vitek Vanecek for a 2-1 goal on the Flyers 22nd shot of the night.
"I was just trying to make a play, it didn't work," Severson said after the game. "I shouldn't have made that one, obviously it went in the back of our net."
It was a backbreaking feeling after the Devils fired everything they possibly could, running into a hot Hart. Unable to finish their opportunities and fighting against big saves by Hart, the Devils drop the rivalry matchup 2-1 for their longest winless streak of the season.
The Devils finished with 48 shots on Carter Hart and just one goal to show for it.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Devils end a three-game homestand on Saturday night against the Florida Panthers.
- The goal was Hughes' 16th of the season and his 35th point in his 30th game of the season. - The first period was highlighted by New Jersey's special teams play (and Carter Hart for the Flyers who faced 16 shots in the first period alone). With Hughes converting on the power play at 4:20, the Devils needed to close out the first killing off a double minor to Miles Wood for a high stick on Noah Cates.

Wood took the penalty with 3:18 left in the first period, where the club put on a clinic in penalty killing. Ryan Graves took nearly 20 seconds off the clock alone, wedging the puck in the boards between his skate and opponents' sticks, trying to get the puck loose. In all, as the first period ended and the third 3:18 ticked off the Flyers power play, New Jersey held the Flyers to a single shot. Once the final 43 seconds expired in the second period, the Flyers were held to just a single shot over their four-minute man advantage.

"We skated well the first period, lots of pucks going to the net," Lindy Ruff said of his team's effort. "We had some good opportunities. We got into some penalty trouble which I think took away our momentum a little bit, I thought our penalty killers did a great job and after that, I thought we stepped on the gas." - Miles Wood immediately knew he was going to the box for his penalty, it was clearly a very obvious and unintentional high stick. Before heading to the box he did skate over to Cates to check on him, putting his hand on his back and saying a few words. Cates went to his locker room for repairs but was able to return. - The second period felt chaotic at most times, penalty-filled and emotions toppling over. Both Michael McLeod and Brendan Smith served fighting majors, with a total of nine penalties called over the twenty minutes, four of which were majors. - The Devils, who entered the game wanting to recreate their shot advantages they had at the beginning of the season, came out flying with eight shots in the opening five minutes of the game before the Flyers had even registered a shot of their own. The shot barrage continued, the Devils hitting 30 shots after forty minutes, compared to the Flyers 15. But after two periods, where it mattered most, the Devils and Flyers were tied at one. - Of the Severson turnover, Lindy Ruff had this to say:

"You know what, that play is just not even in our playbook. We talked this morning about getting pucks to the net, comes off the wall, one-times it, make a play like that. They didn't have a chance in the period. I had just gone down the bench and just talked about making sure we create the chances that are there. That we don't make something high-risk. You get in a game like this, you might have to go to overtime, but to make that play, and trap the people, totally unacceptable." - To start the third the Devils had six shots in the opening three and a half minutes, taking back the rhythm of the game from the rough and tumble second period, to a game better suited to their skills. - Smith played his 600th NHL game. - Ryan Graves had four blocked shots in back-to-back games, which ties a season-high. - The Devils had over sixty shot attempts against the Flyers.
