PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, NJ - The Devils held a full morning skate Thursday at Prudential Center ahead of Game 2 against the New York Rangers. The team had full attendance.
Judging by the workflow, it appears that forward Timo Meier will be elevated to a line with Nico Hischier while Yegor Sharangovich will be insertd into the lineup in place of Jesper Boqvist.
Meier - Hischier - Mercer
Palat - Hughes - Bratt
Wood - Haula - Tatar
Sharangovich - McLeod - Bastian
Siegenthaler - Hamilton
Graves - Marino
Bahl - Severson
Vitek Vanecek appears to be getting the start in net.
"During the year we had a lot of different lines," Hischier said. "Now, everybody is used to playing with a lot of guys. Timo I know well. At the end it's a coach's decision who I play with. I'll just try to do my best to help my team, help my linemates to win hockey games. That's what I'm focused on."
Response
The Devils are looking for a better response in Game 2 from the first.
"It's just simple. We know how to play. We've done it all season," defenseman Damon Severson said. "We've had good games against these guys during the regular seasons. It just ramps up a little bit during the playoffs. We have to be able to raise our level. They raised theirs last game and we weren't able match that unfortunately. We have to make sure we're on top of them tonight."
While going through film, head coach Lindy Ruff focused on the adjustments. But also wanted to emphasize the things his team did well in Game 1 during film session.
"We showed a lot of good stuff from the game," Ruff said. "We showed a lot of good opportunities. We didn't handle the puck quite as good as we wanted to. Maybe that was a little bit of nerves. First playoff game for a lot of players, but I really felt we did a lot of good stuff in the game."
Fast Start
The Devils fell behind 2-0 in the opening 9:30 minutes of Game 1 against the Rangers and couldn't climb out of the hole.
"It was a punch in the face after 10 minutes and it's 2-0," Hischier said. "It took away our jam a bit. Stuff like that shouldn't bother us."
Thus, an emphasis will be paid on getting the first goal and building a lead. Though an early lead is not the necessarily a game breaker.
"It is important to get the first goal. On the other hand, we've proven it, we can come back from goals," Hischier said. "Also I feel like in the playoffs it's harder than in the regular season to come back from a 2-0 deficit. We're going to look forward to scoring the first goal."
