PRE-GAME STORY
Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton appears ready to return to the lineup after missing the previous three games with a lower-body injury.
"Dougie has been day-to-day. He had a good morning. I'm going to say I anticipate him playing," head coach Lindy Ruff said.
Of course, things can always change between now and puck drop. Hamilton was slated to return Tuesday night when the Devils hosted Florida, but was held out as a precaution.
"We want Doug back in the lineup. We thought he may play the other night," Ruff said. "He wasn't quite ready. Tonight, looks like it could be the night."
The team had the following workflow…
Zacha - Hischier - Holtz
Johnsson - Mercer - Bratt
Kuokkanen - Boqvist - Tatar
Vesey - McLeod - Thompson
Graves - Hamilton
Smith - Severson
Siegenthaler - Subban
Structure
The Devils pulled off an impressive victory against Florida, 7-3, Tuesday night. And the Devils looked like, well, the Devils. They played fast, they created chances off the rush and they used their high skill level to convert goals.
Of course, it certainly helped that the Panthers play a similar style. So, both teams were able to trade speed for speed and chance for chance. However, that will not be the case this evening, as the Islanders play the exact opposite style.
New York has a defense-first mentality and rarely stray from their structure and positioning in the defensive zone. Instead, they rely on opponent's becoming impatient and frustrated, resulting in mistakes in which New York can take advantage of in the transition game.
"They're good with their structure. They don't hand you a lot of really good opportunities. You have to earn them," Ruff said. "If you get them down by a couple, you can force them a little bit out of their game because they have to throw some risk into it. They're relying on you to become impatient. With impatience comes the fact that you'll give up some good opportunities. We'll have to guard against that."
While the Devils may not be able to create as much off the rush as they did against Florida, there are still aspects of their victory Tuesday that can be replicated.
"I like a lot of the stuff we did in the offensive zone," Ruff said. "The movement, the puck presence we had in front of the net."
One way the Devils can use their speed against the Islanders, particularly New York's big and lumbering defensive unit, is dumping the puck, forcing the blueliners to pivot out of their backpedal and beat them to the puck in the offensive zone. You can't hit what you can't catch.
"They don't give up a lot. They have a great D there, big guys," Hischier said. "We have to be skating. We have to put pucks behind their D, make them turn and go on the forecheck. That's what we have to do. They're strong back there, but when we are skating well, we can create some."
Ironically, in the end, it may be how each team plays inside its own zone that determines the outcome.
"It'll be a lot of our defensive zone structure against their defensive zone structure," Ruff said.
Frenemies
The Devils will be welcoming two of their own back to Prudential Center tonight in Islanders defenseman Andy Greene and forward Kyle Palmieri.
Greene, who will be appearing in his 999th career NHL game tonight, was the Devils' former captain before being traded in 2020. Though he returned to Newark last year, tonight will be his first time back in front of a full house.
"It's a huge accomplishment," Hischier said of playing 999 games. "Not a lot of players can get to that number, you have to do something right and that's what (Greene has) done. He comes in every night and does the right things. He's a team player, good leader, and I'm kind of honored to have played with him and now be playing against him. He's a great player, great guy. I can't wait to see him tonight."
Hischier, who superseded Greene as captain, still learned a lot from the 16-year NHL vet.
"I'm trying to follow in his steps," Hischier said. "I'm leading my way, but he helped me learn my first couple of years. Just seeing what he does on and off the ice helped me a lot."
The Devils will also be welcoming back to Jersey, for the first time, Palmieri, who played six-plus seasons in a Devils uniform.
"He was a great competitor, great hockey player," Hischier said. "How he dug in every night impressed me. He never gave up. He was a good guy to be around as well. It'll be fun to play against him, too."

PREVIEW
DEVILS (6-3-2) vs. ISLANDERS (5-3-2)
TV:7:00 PM ET; MSG+
Head-to-Head
The Devils and Islanders face off for the first of four meetings this season. The clubs last played each other on May 8, 2021, when the Islanders won 5-1.

Andreas Johnsson is the team's points leader with nine (6G, 3A) and is tied with Pavel Zacha for most goals at six. Devils Captain Nico Hischier leads the team in assists with five, matching his total from last season with 10 less games played.
Defenseman Dougie Hamilton remains day-to-day and has missed the last three games to injury. Forwards Miles Wood (lower-body), Jack Hughes (upper-body) and defenseman Christian Jaros (upper-body) remain out and the team has not provided any recent updates.

Ilya Sorokin has started all but one of the Islanders' games, and has a 5-2-2 record. He has a .939 save percentage and a 1.98 goals against average. After starting the season on the road due to the UBS Arena's construction, the Islanders play its first home game of the season on Nov. 20.
