PRE-GAME STORY

NEWARK, N.J. -The Devils held a morning skate at Prudential Center. The only absentees were forward Erik Haula and goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood.
"Erik is sick," head coach Lindy Ruff said. "He'll be a game-time decision tonight. We'll check in with him later today."
As far as Blackwood, Ruff said the team didn't know how long he'll be out "in terms of days, but we'll have one soon."
For-Schmid About It
The Devils did not run line rushes, but one lineup note is that it appears goalie Akira Schmid will start for New Jersey.
"It's always great to have this opportunity to show yourself a little bit for the future," Schmid said. "I'm always excited to get a game in here."
Schmid is 5-4 on the year with a 2.24 goals-against average and .919 save percentage.
"It's just another game. You can't treat it like anything else," Schmid said. "So, you don't think too much about it. Just get in there, do your best. I think if you work hard and do your best the results will come."
The Devils have only won once against Philadelphia this year out of three contests. That victory came with Schmid in net making 31 of 33 saves.
"They're a hard-working team," Schmid said. "They're hard in front of the net. Just make sure we're strong around the net.
The Devils have a lot of games coming up in a short amount of time. With Blackwood's status still unknown, Schmid will get some chances to play.
"We know we're going to need him to play games," Ruff said. "With Blackwood out, we look at our schedule and realize he has to be a big part of this."
And Schmid hopes to make the most of being a part of this team, and this run.
"Every opportunity you get, you can't take it for granted," Schmid said. "You have to show yourself and prove that you belong."
Philly Special
The Flyers may be well below the Devils in the standings, but they've managed to win two of the three games this season.
"We know what the challenge is, we've lost to them twice already," Ruff said. "You have to play well against any team if you're going to win. It's that close. They're going to play well defensively. We'll try not to give up too much. For us it's making sure we get inside, get inside early and create the hard opportunities."
"Every time we've played them it's a hard game," forward Ondrej Palat said. "They work extremely hard. They're a tough team to beat."
2003 Cup Team
The Devils will be honoring the 2003 Stanley Cup championship club with a pre-game ceremony and other festivities.
"It's a special game," captain Nico Hischier said. "It's a good thing for them and good thing for us having them here watching our game. Hopefully, we'll have a good game for them. Just all around a good celebration for the whole organization. I'm excited for the game tonight."
Championship teams are all unique. And they manage to find something special to catapult themselves to a title.
"A lot of times you find something in your team that carries you through the playoffs," Ruff said. "You find it during the year and it gets you in, then you just build momentum of that. Momentum is a great thing in this game. Whether it's offensively, whether it's your power play, whether it's how well you're playing defensively. There is always something that a team grabs a hold of and ends up winning a championship with."
Right now, Ruff sees something growing in his own club.
"One thing you can wrap your arms around is you're never out of a game," he said. "There's this belief that - even if there's a minute or two minutes - we can get back in this game, we can score a goal, we can score a couple goals. And at the same time, take a lot of pride in playing away from the puck."
