Jake Evans wins Big Ten title

MONTREAL - Three Canadiens prospects played for conference titles in the NCAA ranks on Saturday. One came away a winner.

That was Jake Evans, who picked up two assists in the University of Notre Dame's 3-2 overtime win over Ohio State University to secure the Big Ten Championship.

The 21-year-old centerman's second helper came on the tally that settled the score at the 9:23 mark of the extra frame at Notre Dame's Compton Family Ice Arena.

Evans has enjoyed a solid senior campaign with the Irish, leading the group with 40 points (11 goals and 29 assists) in 36 games, in addition to registering a plus-11 differential.
The Canadiens selected the Toronto native and Irish captain in the seventh round, 207th overall, in 2014.
Elsewhere, Ryan Poehling and St. Cloud State University dropped a 4-1 decision to the University of Denver in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff Championship Game at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, MN.
The 19-year-old centerman scored the lone goal for the Huskies in the loss. It was his 14th goal of the year.

The Canadiens' first-round pick, 25th overall last June, also put up 17 assists this season to amass 31 points in 35 games.
Finally, goaltender Hayden Hawkey's 27-save effort wasn't enough to lead Providence College to a Hockey East Championship at TD Garden as Boston University earned a 2-0 win.
Hawkey surrendered just one goal, though, as BU's second tally came on an empty netter late in the third period.
The 23-year-old junior netminder strung together a 23-11-3 record for the Friars this season, along with a 2.10 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage.
Hawkey was a sixth-round pick of the Canadiens, 177th overall, in 2014.
What's next?
Evans, Poehling and Hawkey will all participate in the 2018 NCAA Men's Hockey Tournament, which features 16 teams and begins with regional action next weekend at four sites across the United States.
Eighteen-year-old freshman goaltender Cayden Primeau - the Canadiens' seventh-round pick, 199th overall in 2017 - and Northeastern University will also take part in the annual competition.
Primeau's numbers this year really do speak for themselves, especially as a newcomer to the collegiate ranks. He posted a 19-7-5 record, along with a sparkling 1.88 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage.
Evans and Hawkey will begin their quest for college hockey supremacy in the East Regional, which is slated for March 23 and 24 in Bridgeport, CT.
For his part, Poehling will be in action in the West Regional, which is scheduled for March 23 and 24 in Sioux Falls, SD.
Primeau, meanwhile, will play in the Northeast Regional, which will be held on March 24 and 25 in Worcester, MA.
The winner of each of the four regionals will quality for the NCAA Frozen Four on April 5 and 7 at the Xcel Energy Center.
